VA - Exotica for Monty (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Exotica is a musical genre, named after the 1957 Martin Denny album of the same title that was popular during the 1950s to mid-1960s with Americans who came of age during World War II. The musical colloquialism exotica mean tropical ersatz good, the non-native, pseudo experience of insular Oceania, Southeast Asia, Hawaii, the Amazon basin, the Andes and tribal Africa. Denny described the musical style as "a combination of the South Pacific and the Orient...what a lot of people imagined the islands to be like...it's pure fantasy though." While the South Seas forms the core region, exotica reflect the "musical impressions" of every place from standard travel destinations to the mythical "shangri-las" dreamt of by armchair safari-ers. A girl group is a music act featuring several female singers who generally harmonize together. The term "girl group" is also used in a narrower sense in the United States to denote the wave of American female pop music singing groups, many of whom were influenced by doo-wop, and which flourished in the late 1950s and early 1960s between the decline of early rock and roll and start of the British Invasion. All-female bands, in which members also play instruments, are usually considered a separate phenomenon. These groups are sometimes called "girl bands" to differentiate, although this terminology is not universally followed.

With the advent of the music industry and radio broadcasting, a number of girl groups emerged, such as the Andrews Sisters. The late 1950s saw the emergence of all-female singing groups as a major force, with 750 distinct girl groups releasing songs that reached US and UK music charts from 1960 to 1966. The Supremes alone held 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 during the height of the wave and throughout most of the British Invasion rivaled the Beatles in popularity.

Girl groups have a wide array of subject matter in their songs, depending on time and place and who was producing. Songs also had a penchant for reflecting the political and cultural climate around them. For instance, songs with abusive undertones were somewhat common during the 1950's -1970's. One notable example was the song "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" by the Crystals. During the "golden age of girl groups", lyrics were disparate, ranging from songs about mean dogs to underage pregnancy. However, common sentiments were also found in ideas like new love, pining after a crush or lover, and heartache. Some songs sounded upbeat or cheerful and sang about falling in love, whereas others took a decidedly more melancholic turn. Groups like the Shangri-Las, with the song "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" sang about the darker side of being in love. (Wikipedia)

So, it should not be surprising that most of the track in this 3 CD compilation were released in the 50's and 60's. Also, there is only one track by each girl group in the 75 selected tracks presented here with the exception of two by the Supremes. Enjoy!

Sunshine Pop is a retrospective term for a more cheerful or wistful style of Pop which emerged in the mid 1960s as "soft pop". Influenced by Easy Listening, Jingles, and Psychedelia, the genre largely consisted of lesser-known artists who imitated more popular groups like The Association, The Mamas & The Papas, and The 5th Dimension. The music usually contains light production, catchy melodies, and prominent vocal harmonies. Common instruments are acoustic guitars and/or piano accompanied by Western Classical Music instruments like harpsichord, glockenspiel, and flute.

The style should not be conflated with "sunshine/happy music" or "Beach Boys-esque music" - though influential, the Beach Boys almost never worked in the genre. Sunshine pop is typically inflected with jazzy chords and soft Bossa nova rhythms, and despite its name, may inspire melancholy and a sense of longing for the past. Fruits, colors, and/or cosmic concepts were also recurrent subject matter. Sometimes, the music may resemble Psychedelic Pop with less surreal atmospherics, Bubblegum with more sophistication, or a merge of Folk Pop and Psychedelic Folk. Some song examples are "Windy", "Monday, Monday", and "Up, Up and Away", those of which served as a template for artists like The Free Design, The Peppermint Rainbow, The Sugar Shoppe, Harmony Grass, and The Yellow Balloon.

Los Angeles-based songwriters/producers like Roger Nichols, Jimmy Webb, and Paul Williams had a major hand in shaping many sunshine pop acts. Building on the "California Sound" formulated by the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and the Mamas and the Papas' John Phillips, Curt Boettcher became one of the most pivotal figures of sunshine pop, producing quintessential psyche pop crossover albums like Eternity's Children, Begin, and Present Tense. In the 1980s and 1990s, sunshine pop found a resurgence in Japan, strongly influencing many prime Shibuya-kei players. This revitalized interest in sunshine pop eventually reached Europe and the United States, and the genre was revived among indie musicians.  (RYM)

Chanson is the French word for "song". The word is often used in music to mean any song with French words, but it is more often used when talking about songs in which lyrics have been set to music by French classical composers. Very often "chansons" refers to the French songs that were sung in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. People who sang these chansons were called "chansonniers". They had various forms, including ballade, rondeau and virelai. Some composers at the time liked to set popular poetry to music. The earliest chansons were for two, three or four voices, many of them being for three voices. By the 16th century most were for four voices. Sometimes, the singers were accompanied by instruments.  A chanson "song"is in general any lyric-driven French song, usually polyphonic and secular. A singer specializing in chansons is known as a "chanteur" (male) or "chanteuse" (female); a collection of chansons, especially from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, is also known as a chansonnier.

In France today "chanson" or "chanson française" typically refers to the music of singers such as Charles Trenet, Guy Béart, Jacques Brel, Jean Ferrat, Georges Brassens, Édith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Yves Montand, Barbara, Dalida, Serge Reggiani, Salvatore Adamo, Brigitte Fontaine, William Sheller, Renaud, Léo Ferré,  Juliette Greco, Mireille Mathieu, Gilbert Bécaud, Monique Serf (Barbara) and Serge Gainsbourg and can be distinguished from the rest of French "pop" music by following the rhythms of French language, rather than those of English, and a higher standard for lyrics. AM Gold (previously titled Super Hits) is a 34-volume series issued by Time Life during the 1990's, spotlighting popular music - primarily, soft rock and non-disco Top 40 music - played on Top 40 radio stations during the 1960's and 1970's.

Much like Time-Life's other series chronicling popular music, volumes in the "AM Gold" series covered a specific time period, including single years in some volumes and stylistic trends in others. Each volume was issued on a compact disc, cassette or (on "Super Hits"-titled volumes issued in 1990) 2-LP vinyl record set. Individual volumes generally contained 22 tracks and represented the highlighted time period's most popular and noteworthy tracks.
