Gandalf - Gallery of Dreams + Live [2012] (3 x CD's)

This is a re-release of the legendary 1992 album plus unreleased live recordings. Full of epic grandeur and romanticism, Gandalfs's 1992 "Gallery Of Dreams" is a masterpiece. This album is everything you would want from Gandalf. This album includes former Genesis guitar legend Steve Hackett. There are many guitar leads both acoustic and electric on this masterpiece. From the first few bars of music, you will be moved in ways that can only be described by simply listening. What clearly makes this a special album is the joint collaboration with Steve Hackett. "Gallery of Dreams" contains lots of "Hackett'isms" and works unbelievably well with the symphonic touches that typifies Gandalf's work. With accents of flutes, woodwinds and wind chimes, Gandalf creates a very medieval/Renaissance era'ish atmospheres and emotions. This album has been on my desert island list for some time now. Although almost entirely instrumental, a young Tracy Hitchings also is featured on the title track which tastefully accents the album.

This album captures everything the late sixties, early seventies had to offer in music, technology and spirit. The live albums that has been expertly recorded it has just enough echo to have that "live reverb" sound. The audience noise is silent until the end of the song and seems somewhat distant. The album is mostly instrumental so it has a "journey" feeling in that you are taken through some sort of musical mystical trip using dreamy song writing as well as the always spacial effects of the mellotron, used in generous portions. Hackett's playing is very reminiscent of his playing on Selling England by the Pound, long sustains and soaring solos, some of his best work. His guitar is a major part of the appeal of this recording. It has flavors of all the best bands from the time period yet keeps a fresh approach and feels original at the same time. It won't disappoint. I recommend this album to anyone who likes soothing, atmospheric music with great sounding guitars. (Amazon)
