TONY BENNETT R.I.P.
Tony Bennett - Rarities, Outtakes & Other Delights, Vol. 01+02 + Tony Bennett - Colombia Singles Vol. 01 - Vol 06 [2011] (8 x CDs)
Anthony Dominick Benedetto (August 3, 1926 – July 21, 2023), known professionally as Tony Bennett, was an American singer. Bennett amassed many accolades throughout his career, including 20 Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. He was named an NEA Jazz Master and a Kennedy Center Honoree and was the founder of the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens, New York.[1] Bennett sold more than 50 million records worldwide.
This selection come from the monumental Anthology "Tony Bennett - The Complete Collection" which contained all 63 of Tony Bennett’s albums in separate facsimile LP jackets together with 3 DVD's, 6 volumes of Bennett’s non-album singles, a previously unreleased CD of his Las Vegas debut from 1964, and 2 CD's of rarities, including Bennett’s first recording, an Army V-Disc of “St. James Infirmary Blues,” making it an absolute treasure trove for Bennett fans and collectors. Assembled chronologically, Tony Bennett - The Complete Collection presents the breathtaking entirety of Bennett's recorded repertoire, more than a thousand individual songs spanning six decades.
Signed by Columbia's Mitch Miller after a few good words from comedian Bob Hope, Tony Bennett's first studio singles for Columbia Screen were recorded in March 1950. Miller insisted Bennett avoid trying to sound like Frank Sinatra, who was still signed to the label. Instead, Bennett seemed to combine the delivery of Frankie Laine and Dinah Washington. In Bennett's early sides for Columbia, you hear Laine's popular "crying" style leveraged with bel canto phrasing and Washington's searing jukebox delivery. It was a shrewd move by Bennett, though there also seemed to be a push at Columbia to have him record some songs in Italian to retain his ethnic appeal and distinguish him from the more assimilated Sinatra. Throughout the early '50s, Bennett recorded many outstanding and little-known singles that appear in this box. The list includes Once There Lived a Fool, I Won't Cry Anymore, Please My Love and Silly Dreamer. There also were quite a few lousy songs that were done way over the top. But in nearly every case, Bennett was cast as a passionate, sensitive male singer. His image as the boy from the next tenament connected solidly with urban female radio-listeners and record buyers, especially given each song's dramatic, orchestral send-up. (Amazon)
I have chosen to share two newly curated collections,"Rarities, Outtakes and Other Delights" (2xCD's) and "The Columbia Singles" (6xCDs) available exclusively in this set.
"Rarities, Outtakes and Other Delights" collects rare tracks, previously unreleased outtakes, guest appearances on other artist's albums, soundtrack songs and more beginning with the recently discovered 1946 V-Disc recording of “St. James Infirmary Blues” that “effervescent delight,” which was Tony’s very first known recording. Nestled among the "Rarities" are two tracks from another fabled concert Bennett gave at the Latin Casino in Philadelphia with the Count Basie Orchestra, which was recorded and never released.
"The Columbia Singles" brings together for the first time all of the singles Bennett recorded for Columbia Records, the label he signed with in 1950. Most of them recorded in the early 1950's, "The Columbia Singles" includes the A-sides and B-sides that were not included on individual albums. (Amazon)

Wholly unrelated after-thought - any chance of Butterboy's collection possibly having a copy of 'Flash and the Pan - Lights in the Night 1980'? If so, need it.. *grin*
ReplyDeleteHi d2o.
