VA - 1-2-3-4 Punk & New Wave 1976-1979 [1999] (5 x CDs)

PUNK & NEW WAVE

VA - 1-2-3-4 Punk & New Wave 1976-1979 [1999] (5 x CDs)

This box set comes in a sleek black long box with a die-cut lid that reveals four metal badges attached to the front page of a 96-page booklet. The booklet contains detailed information and images about the punk and new wave scene from 1976 to 1979. Each of the five CDs is housed in a colourful cardboard sleeve with a number on the back. Some of the first copies of this set also included a correction slip for two of the tracks. Discog states that, at least some early copies included what appears to be an errata slip for CD2, track 17, and CD5, track four. Also, the numerals on the silver "buttons" on the booklet, which protrude through the lid are not all vertical, but tend to be rotated anti-clockwise as the numbers increase. This has been verified with multiple copies.

The aim of this box set is to give the listener a comprehensive overview of a particular era and type of music. It is impossible to include everything, and that is not the intention of this set. Rather, this set tries to answer two questions: a) “Does this set give the listener an insightful look into the genre?” and b) “Does this set teach the listener something useful about the genre?” The answer to both questions is YES.

Punk rock was not defined by a single sound or style, but rather by the attitude and approach of the musicians who created it. They challenged the conventions and norms of the music industry and society, and expressed themselves in original and innovative ways. The Clash, The Jam, Talking Heads, X and The Damned are some of the classic bands that came out of this era, but their music is very diverse and hard to categorize under one label. This diversity is one of the strengths of punk rock, but also one of the challenges of summarizing and anthologizing it.

Punk rock was a revolutionary and influential genre that changed the face of music. It is hard to pinpoint the exact beginning of the punk era, but 1975 is often considered the starting point, based on the emergence of bands and artists such as The Ramones, Patti Smith and Television in New York City, and The Buzzcocks and The Sex Pistols in the UK. However, by the end of the '70s, punk was already evolving and branching into different subgenres, such as post-punk, new wave, hardcore, no wave, Oi!, psychobilly and more.

This box set is a great introduction to the first wave of punk and new wave from both England and the USA. It covers a wide range of bands and styles, from the iconic to the obscure. It features classics as well as hidden gems that deserve more recognition. This collection is essential for anyone who wants to discover or revisit this amazing period of musical history.  It captures the essence and the diversity of the genre, as well as the cultural and social impact it had. It showcases the creativity and innovation of the musicians who challenged the conventions and norms of the music industry and society. This box set is a treasure for any fan of British punk music. It has everything: the sound quality, the track selection, the booklet, the packaging. It is a flawless compilation of British punk and it captures the essence and the diversity of the genre like no other. The box set is not only a collection of songs, but also a document of a revolutionary and influential era of musical history.  (B)
