Lionel Leo Hampton, born on April 20, 1908, in Louisville, Kentucky, was an American jazz vibraphonist, drummer, percussionist, and bandleader. Known for his rhythmic vitality and showmanship, Hampton worked with jazz musicians from Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones1. His career began in Chicago, where he played drums for the Chicago Defender Newsboys’ Band before moving to California in the late 1920s. He made his recording debut in 1929 with Paul Howard’s Quality Serenaders. Hampton’s work on the vibraphone, a relatively new instrument at the time, popularized its use in jazz.

The box set “The Complete Lionel Hampton Victor Sessions 1937-1941 [2008]” excavates Hampton’s musical genius and his ability to bring together the greatest soloists of his time. This collection, garnished with a fistful of alternate takes, is a welcome and long overdue realization of The Complete Lionel Hampton 1937-1941. The box set was issued by Mosaic Records.
