PSYCHEDELIC BRITAIN

VA - Justafixation (Flower Powered Trippers From The British Psychedelic Subculture) [2019] (3 x CDs)

In the kaleidoscopic haze of Britain’s late-60s counterculture, Justafixation emerges as a sonic time capsule, an evocative 3-CD box set that resurrects the forgotten voices of a generation intoxicated by possibility, rebellion, and reverb. Released by Particles in 2019, an unofficial release that is a lovingly curated compilation unearths over 70 tracks recorded between 1966 and 1970, each one a petal in the flower-powered bouquet of British psychedelia. Over three separate, extremely limited vinyl pressings, Justafixation's brief appearance served up a sublime collection of rare lysergic pleasures from the 1960s British landscape.

What sets Justafixation apart from its more polished cousins (Love, Poetry And Revolution, Looking At The Pictures In The Sky) is its commitment to the obscure. These aren’t the chart-toppers or household names; they’re the dreamers, the studio ghosts, the one-single wonders who flickered briefly before vanishing into acetate oblivion. From the lysergic jazz of Spider’s “The Comedown Song” to the whimsical melancholy of Boeing Duveen’s “Which Dreamed It,” the compilation traces the contours of a scene that was as fragmented as it was fertile.

The set is divided into three CDs, Justafixation, Justavibration, and Justafication each with its own thematic arc.

CD1 - Justafixation The first disc lays the groundwork with a gritty selection of mod-psych and garage-influenced tracks from the late '60s. It opens with Spider’s haunting “The Comedown Song,” setting a disoriented, hazy tone that carries through fuzz-drenched gems by The Koobas, Legay, and Sleepy. The energy is raw and immediate, giving listeners a taste of the underground scene where psychedelia was still closely tied to beat music and post-R&B experimentation.

CD2 - Justavibration This middle chapter veers into baroque pop and whimsical acid folk, embracing lush arrangements and surreal lyrics. Tracks by Boeing Duveen & The Beautiful Soup, Billy Nicholls, and The Mindbenders showcase shimmering orchestration and dreamy textures. It's a mellow, trippy ride through pastoral moods and flower-child optimism, reflecting the genre’s expansion into cinematic and theatrical territory.

CD3 - Justafication The final disc ventures into heavier freakbeat, early prog, and deep psych textures, with contributions from Herbal Mixture, Ramases & Selket, and Virgin Sleep. There's a sense of emotional intensity and darker introspection here, with hints of what British psychedelia would become in its proto-prog incarnation. This disc wraps the journey with a blend of swirling production and existential exploration.

Packaging-wise, the clamshell box and 36-page booklet are a collector’s delight, filled with rare memorabilia and liner notes that contextualize each track within the broader psychedelic tapestry. This compilation is a cultural excavation.

Justafixation is more than a listening experience; it’s a blueprint for thematic storytelling. It invites reinterpretation, expansion, and dialogue. (B)

    1. Hi Dr Robert.
if the fuzz pedals and flutes didn’t do it, the patchouli surely seals the deal. Justafixation really is a fragrant trip through the paisley-tinted corners of British psychedelia. Glad it stirred the senses.
      Cheers.
