EDGAR WINTER
Edgar Winter - I've Got News For You [2018] + Tell Me In A Whisper, The Solo Albums 1970 - 1981[2018] (10 x CDs)
Edgar Winter is a genre-defying American musician born in Beaumont, Texas, on December 28, 1946. Known for his shock of white hair and dazzling versatility, he’s a multi-instrumentalist who mastered keyboards, saxophone, and percussion early on. Edgar burst onto the scene in the early ’70s with his band White Trash, blending soul, blues, and rock with horn-driven swagger. He later formed The Edgar Winter Group, scoring massive hits like “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride,” both showcasing his flair for innovation and studio wizardry.
Beyond the charts, Winter’s career spans jazz fusion, pop, and experimental rock, often pushing boundaries with early synthesizer use and genre fusion. He’s collaborated with legends like Rick Derringer and Ringo Starr, and remains a respected figure in both mainstream and underground circles. Edgar’s musical journey is one of fearless exploration, always evolving, always expressive, and always unmistakably his own.
I’ve included two box sets in this post, each offering a distinct lens into Edgar Winter’s evolving artistry, one focused on his solo explorations, the other on his band-driven, genre-hopping peak.
Edgar Winter - I've Got News For You [2018]
This six-disc box set is a full-throttle ride through Edgar Winter’s most exploratory years, spanning 1971 to 1977. Released in 2018, I've Got News For You doesn’t just repackage familiar albums, it recontextualizes them. The set includes six remastered LPs, from the horn-heavy soul-rock of Edgar Winter’s White Trash to the genre-bending synth-funk of The Edgar Winter Group. Each disc is sequenced to reflect Winter’s restless creativity, with bonus tracks adding texture rather than clutter.
The standout is Roadwork, a live double album that captures White Trash in their prime, raw, sweaty, and unfiltered. They Only Come Out at Night delivers the hits (“Frankenstein,” “Free Ride”), but it’s the deeper cuts on Shock Treatment and Jasmine Nightdreams that reveal Winter’s flair for jazz fusion and theatrical rock. Recycled closes the set with a funkier, more introspective tone, rounding out the arc with surprising cohesion.
Bonus material includes single edits, live takes, and alternate mixes, nothing previously unreleased, but enough to satisfy archival completeness. The remastering is clean and respectful, preserving analog warmth while sharpening detail. Packaging is sturdy, with replica sleeves and a clamshell box, though notably absent are liner notes or essays, this one’s built for listeners who already know the terrain.
What makes this set compelling isn’t just the music, it’s the sequencing. By presenting the albums in chronological order, the box charts Winter’s evolution from bluesy showman to genre-hopping innovator. It’s a portrait of an artist who refused to be boxed in, even when boxed sets came calling. For collectors, it’s not about rarity, it’s about range, and this one delivers. (B)
Edgar Winter - Tell Me In A Whisper, The Solo Albums (1970–1981) [2018]
This four CD box set is a deep dive into Edgar Winter’s solo catalogue, tracing a decade of musical shape-shifting that often gets overshadowed by his band work. Tell Me In A Whisper gathers four remastered albums, Entrance [1970], Jasmine Nightdreams [1975], The Edgar Winter Album [1979], and Standing on Rock [1981] each revealing a different facet of Winter’s restless artistry.
Entrance is the sleeper gem here: a sprawling, genre-fluid debut that blends jazz, blues, and psych with orchestral ambition. It’s raw, exploratory, and full of unexpected turns. Jasmine Nightdreams leans into funk and soul, with the title track offering a rare moment of vulnerability. By the time we reach The Edgar Winter Album, the production tightens and the hooks sharpen, this is Winter at his most radio-friendly, without losing his edge. Standing on Rock closes the set with a punchier, guitar-driven sound that nods to early 80s arena rock, but still carries his signature eccentricity.
Bonus tracks include mono edits, B-sides, and alternate mixes. The remastering is solid across all CDs, and the packaging is clean and functional, with individual sleeves and a clamshell box. No liner notes, which feels like a missed opportunity given the stylistic breadth on display.
What makes this set compelling is its narrative arc. You’re not just hearing four albums, you’re watching an artist evolve, experiment, and occasionally double back. Winter’s solo work is less about hits and more about mood, texture, and risk. For collectors, this is the quieter half of the story, but no less vital. It’s the whisper behind the roar. (B)

Awesome, thanks BB. While I'm sure his later albums are good, I'm here for the I've Got News For You [2018] release.
ReplyDeleteHi BLB.
DeleteI've Got News For You [2018] is the real feast. That six-disc set captures Edgar Winter at his most adventurous, from the horn-driven soul of White Trash to the synth-funk swagger of Shock Treatment and Recycled. And Roadwork, that live double album is pure sweat and swagger.
I like his works because he was no fluff, just a raw genre-hopping innovator.
Cheers.
