VA - School Yard Breaks Vol. 1- 3 [2004-2008] (3 x CDs)

School Yard Breaks Vol. 1-3 isn’t just a crate-digger’s delight, it’s a full-on celebration of the sample-rich funk, soul, and disco grooves that powered golden-era hip-hop. TIt is a a love letter to the dusty corners of the funk and soul universe, those deep grooves and forgotten flipsides that once lit up block parties and backroom battles. Released unofficially by Strictly Breaks between 2004 and 2008, these three double LPs are packed with raw, rhythmic heat, each one handpicked for its breakbeat potential and B-boy bounce.

What makes this series sing is its instinct for the unexpected. Sure, there are a few familiar names, but the real thrill is in the curveballs—Brazilian funk, European library joints, obscure disco burners, and private-press soul sides that somehow never made it big but sound tailor-made for the MPC. Tracks like Makonde Soseme’s “Manzara”, Gerson King Combo’s “Mandamentos Black”, and Denton & Cook’s “Quiller” aren’t just rare—they’re revelatory, full of tension, texture, and that elusive loop-worthy magic.

The sequencing across all three volumes is loose but purposeful. You’ll move from steel band calypso to deep disco, from Afro-funk to psychedelic soul, often within the same side. There’s no filler here, just crate gold, much of it sourced from original 45s and LPs that rarely surface in playable condition. Even the more recognizable names, Edwin Starr, Melvin Sparks, Pleasure, Geno Washington, show up with lesser-known cuts that still pack a punch.

Unofficial though they may be, these comps carry serious curatorial weight. They’re not just for beatmakers, they’re for anyone who loves the thrill of discovery, the crackle of vinyl, and the joy of finding that perfect groove buried in plain sight. (B)
