CARMELL JONES
Carmell Jones - Mosaic Select 02 [2003] (3 x CDs)
The tone settles in before anything else. A few minutes into this set, the trumpet of Carmell Jones finds its place, not pushed forward, but clear enough to carry the line without strain. Issued in 2003 by Mosaic Records, the three discs gather his Pacific Jazz and related sessions, and they hold together through feel rather than chronology.
The phrasing is direct but never hurried. Lines move cleanly through the arrangements, often sitting just ahead of the rhythm section, then easing back into it. Around that, the ensembles remain balanced. Piano and horns support without crowding, leaving enough space for the trumpet to shape the direction without forcing it.
As the set unfolds, the differences between sessions begin to show. Some tracks lean toward a tighter, arranged sound, others open slightly, giving more room for movement. The shifts are gradual, one piece leading into the next without breaking the overall flow.
What becomes clear over time is the consistency of approach. Even when the setting changes, the tone remains steady, warm, controlled, and measured. The music does not reach for contrast, it works within its range. Left to play, the set feels less like a collection of sessions and more like a continuous presence. The details are subtle, but they accumulate, one phrase following another, until the sound settles into something familiar, shaped by restraint and carried by a voice that never needs to push beyond its own line. Another artist I'm not really familiar with, thanks Butterboy.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear, Bob Mac.
DeleteIt's always a delight to hear new music. I hope this one works for you.
Cheers.
Thanks for posting this. I think this is the only Mosaic Select you can stream on Apple music!
ReplyDeleteHi Joe,
DeleteMy pleasure. Nice when the stars align and a set like this becomes easy to hear.
I will post the entire series over the balance of year and into the next.
Cheers.
Bob Mac said the same thing that I was going to! Thanks for the opportunity to hear somebody new (to me).
ReplyDeleteCheers,

Hi Mike,
DeleteAlways nice when someone new steps into the frame, especially on a set as warm and inviting as this one. Carmell had such a clean, lyrical way of playing that he tends to win people over quickly.
Glad the post opened another door for you.
Cheers.
Thanks. Have a couple or three with Carmell as sideman, (Harold Land one of my faves). Been a while since I heard them but don't remember Carmell disappointing. Looks like you secured another weekend of joy.
