THE SOUND YOUR EYES CAN FOLLOW
VA - RCA Victor Stereo Action Series (1961-1962) (20 x CDs)
When RCA Victor introduced the Stereo Action Series in 1961, it wasn’t simply launching another line of easy‑listening LPs, it was unveiling a full‑scale experiment in what stereo could become. Marketed under the unforgettable slogan “The Sound Your Eyes Can Follow,” the series treated stereo not as a passive listening format but as a kinetic medium, a way to make music move through space with intention and flair. These albums were engineered to demonstrate motion itself: instruments gliding, ricocheting, and blooming across the soundstage in ways that felt futuristic for the time.
RCA’s engineers approached the studio like a laboratory. According to the 1995 History of Space Age Pop liner notes, the Stereo Action sessions often involved physically separating orchestral sections into different rooms or isolated studio zones. This allowed producers like Esquivel, Dick Schory, Ray Martin, Vic Schoen, and Manny Albam to choreograph sound with precision — brass sweeping left to right, percussion darting between channels, strings rising like a curtain from the far edges of the stereo field. It was stereo as spectacle, engineered movement rather than naturalistic placement.
The visual identity reinforced the concept. Each LP arrived in a custom die‑cut sleeve, every title with its own geometric window revealing a glossy inner image. The design language, metallic inks, modernist typography, abstract photography, aligned perfectly with the era’s fascination with technology, architecture, and the promise of the “space‑age” home. These jackets weren’t just packaging; they were part of the performance.
Though the series lasted only through 1962, its impact is outsized. Stereo Action stands as one of RCA’s boldest attempts to merge engineering, design, and musical imagination into a single product line. Today, the LPs remain prized not only for their sonic theatrics but for capturing a moment when stereo was new, thrilling, and full of possibility, a time when listeners truly believed their hi‑fi could make sound move. I want to thank JACK who first alerted me to the series
He said "I used to refer to it as my parents generation’s version of Pink Floyd. Sound would bounce back and forth in a sort of spacey way. Listening to them on headphones in the dark was kind of like “Dark Side of the Moon”. If you ever have a chance to hear one of the albums, I think you’d be impressed."
Enjoy! you might be shocked by how modern the experience still feels.

thank you so much B.B 4 all this and your time u put into it. thank you
ReplyDeleteThank you, Aussie.
DeleteI appreciate your kind words.
Cheers.
Indispensable collection.
ReplyDeleteThank you BB for your time, effort and good memories from simpler times.
Hi LoungeTracks,
DeleteIf it feels indispensable to you, then the heart of the idea came through. So glad it stirred some of those simpler‑time feelings on your side too.
Cheers.
Thanks. Always good to get more high quality sounding things from a time when the world wasn't on fire.
ReplyDeleteHi tomatodon,
DeleteI know exactly what you mean, there’s a certain comfort in hearing music from a time when the world felt a little less chaotic. High‑quality sound, strong songwriting, and a sense of possibility baked into the grooves.
Cheers
Very smart design. Thanks a lot BB.
ReplyDeleteHi Hervé,
DeleteThis one needed a light touch to let the idea breathe, so it’s great to hear it feels like a smart design. Thanks, as always, for the kind support.
Cheers.
It's amazing what you can still find - I presume the physical seperation of the musicians was due to the limits of multi-track recording at the time.
ReplyDeleteHi Dr Robert,
DeleteThose early multi‑track limitations meant players often had to be physically separated or isolated just to keep things clean enough to mix later. You can almost hear the engineering decisions in recordings from that era, which is part of the charm. Constraints shaping creativity.
Cheers.
I am a sucker for stereo but the music in this collection, or at least the 10 or so cuts I could stand, was so corny had to quit. How musicians at that time could play these songs straight without irony explains the generation gap of the 60s. For cool stereo give me Sgt. Peppers or the Sons of Champlin. And to hell with modern bands which don't take advantage of stereo.
ReplyDeleteHi Jimbo,
DeleteFair enough. These Stereo Action cuts are definitely their own flavour. They were made to show off the new “ping‑pong the room around your head” possibilities, and subtlety wasn’t always the priority. That straight‑faced delivery you mention is exactly what makes them such a time capsule. The world was shifting fast, and these arrangers were still playing it like the old rules applied. Still, even the corniest moments here tell you a lot about where the technology and the imagination were sitting right before everything blew open.
Appreciate you giving it a try.
Cheers.
Thank You,This brings back memories of My aunts Stereo Demo albums. The music was not to my taste but than again it mesmorized me.
ReplyDeleteHi murphy,
DeleteThose demo albums had a real spell to them, even when the music wasn’t quite your thing, the sound itself could pull you in. All that wide‑open stereo trickery was designed to mesmerize, and for a kid hearing it on a proper setup, it absolutely did.
Cheers
A great post BB! Uncommon, unique, and historical. Big thanks to you and JACK.
ReplyDeleteHi mrRadio,
DeleteReally appreciate that. This series sits in that sweet spot where the odd, the inventive, and the historically important all meet, so it’s great to receive your comment. And yes, big thanks to Jack for helping keep these corners of the past alive.
Cheers.
Excellent collection. Cheers BB!
ReplyDeleteThank you, zipper,
DeleteThe Stereo Action sets are such a time capsule, all that wide‑open staging and playful engineering. Really nice to know the collection landed well.
Cheers.
A surprise and a delight. I love this series and to see them collected in one place is a special bonus. Thanks so much for your time and dedication BB. I have one (1) of the original LPs and it's presented very elaborately; clearly these were intended to be a premium product.
ReplyDeleteHi Phillip,
DeleteThose original LPs really were something else, beautifully put together and meant to feel like an event the moment you opened the sleeve. Having even one in the collection is a treat. Bringing the whole series together in one run lets that premium spirit shine through again, and it is great to know it landed as a genuine surprise for you.
Cheers.
