TRIBUTE
VA - Borrowed Tunes, A Tribute to Neil Young [1994] (2 x CDs)
This double‑disc tribute from 1994 gathers a wide circle of artists who approach Neil Young’s catalogue with a sense of shared history. Released by Sony Music Canada and Everyman, the set is divided into Out of the Blue and Into the Black, a structure that mirrors the acoustic and electric halves of Young’s own work.
CD1 leans toward quieter textures, with Colin Linden opening the set before Hemingway Corner offer a gentle reading of Tell Me Why. Jann Arden’s version of Birds stands out for its careful balance of voice, steel guitar and muted brass, while Crash Vegas bring a soft, atmospheric touch to Pocahontas. Lori Yates’ Helpless folds mandolin and piano into a warm ensemble sound, and Cowboy Junkies close the disc with a subdued take on Tired Eyes.
CD2 moves into heavier territory. Skydiggers open with Mr. Soul, followed by Barney Bentall’s steady version of Like a Hurricane. Our Lady Peace strip The Needle and the Damage Done back to its essentials, while Junkhouse push F!#in’ Up* into rougher ground. Blue Rodeo, Big Sugar and 54‑40 each find their own angle on Young’s electric language, giving the collection a sense of breadth without losing its centre. (B)

Wow - Tough to do better than Neil on his songs! Should be a good listen, eh?
ReplyDeleteThanks & Cheers,

Hi Mike,
DeleteIt’s true, matching Neil on his own songs is no easy task, but that’s exactly what makes this tribute such an interesting listen. Hearing different artists step into his space, each bringing their own tone and feel, gives the songs a fresh angle without losing the spirit that makes them Neil’s. It’s a strong set, and definitely worth settling into.
Cheers.
