JOHNNY RICHARDS
Johnny Richards - Mosaic Select 17 [2005] (3 X CDs)
Johnny Richards was one of the great architects of mid‑century jazz orchestration, a composer‑arranger who treated big‑band writing as a canvas for drama, colour and rhythmic invention. Mosaic Select 17 gathers six albums recorded between 1955 and 1966, revealing a musician whose imagination stretched far beyond the swing tradition. These sessions show Richards blending classical tension, Latin rhythm, film‑score atmosphere and bold brass writing into a language entirely his own.
The first disc pairs the chamber‑like Annotations of the Muses with the explosive Wide Range. The contrast is striking: one built on subtle textures and narrative flow, the other on full‑band power and sharp rhythmic drive. Richards’ orchestrations move easily between delicacy and force, always shaped by his instinct for dramatic pacing.
The second disc dives into his Afro‑Cuban explorations. Experiments in Sound and The Rites of Diablo push big‑band writing into ritualistic territory, using percussion, chant‑like motifs and dense harmonies to create music that feels both grounded and otherworldly. These sessions show how naturally Richards integrated Latin rhythmic structures without losing the complexity of his jazz writing.
The final disc presents two unexpected turns: a bold reimagining of My Fair Lady and a lighter, melodic Latin‑infused project. Both reveal how flexible Richards’ voice had become by the mid‑sixties, capable of reshaping familiar material or crafting new moods with ease.
Across all three discs, the set highlights Richards’ command of large ensembles and his ability to fuse rhythm, colour and structure into something unmistakably his. For collectors, it’s a rare, complete view of a composer who expanded big‑band jazz into orchestral territory few others attempted. For listeners, it’s a reminder that Johnny Richards was not just an arranger, he was a visionary builder of sound. (B)

Love this stuff but just don't know how to get it. Similar to this, a favorite album was Dee Barton Plays Stan Kenton. Brassy and loud, a treat for the ears. And the old stereo mixes are so superior to now it seems. The Mercury label was the most innovative in stereo. Might want a Mercury stereo comp. (Hint hint) I loved the music played on US talk shows like on Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Jay Leno, etc., but there doesn't seem to be a record of those bands aside from the the role of making intos and outros for the talk shows. But it is similar to this in that the musicians are pros and brassy and brash.
ReplyDeleteHi Jimbo,
DeleteYou’ve touched on a whole world of sound that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. Dee Barton’s Plays Stan Kenton is a powerhouse, that brassy, full‑tilt orchestral punch he specialised in is exactly the kind of thing that scratches the same itch as Richards’ work here. Those old stereo mixes really did have a kind of swagger, wide, bold, and engineered by people who treated the studio like a performance space. Mercury’s stereo innovations were genuinely ahead of their time, so a comp built around that label’s most adventurous recordings is a tempting idea. I’ll keep that hint in mind.
And you’re right about the talk‑show bands. They brought a level of musicianship to TV that rarely gets documented, even though they shaped the sound of late‑night culture for decades. It’s a fascinating corner of music history, and very much in the spirit of sets like this.
Thanks for the thoughtful note.
Cheers.
first, Imagenets vanishes; second, it is replaced by Send with 10gb daily limit, then with a generic limit, eventually with "This server is in maintenance mode. Refresh this page in some minutes" unless I pay a montlhy fee; third, Pixeldrain is banned in Italy (as Zippyshare years ago)... not an happy end, uh? byebye
ReplyDeleteHi Franco,
DeleteIt’s a bit rich to complain about not being able to download when the music here is offered freely, without ads, without paywalls, and built from countless hours of work, research, curation, tagging, checking, and posting. Respect goes both ways.
File hosts change, countries block things, limits shift, that’s just the landscape. But I choose the hosts I use, I maintain the links, and I keep the archive running for everyone. Pixeldrain works for the vast majority of visitors, and you’re the only one who reports issues with it.
I’m always willing to help when someone has a genuine problem, but not when it comes wrapped in complaints and no appreciation for the effort behind all of this.
Cheers.
Hey Butterboy, love the recent stuff you've been uploading recently, is there any update as to if or when the forum chat is going to be revived?
ReplyDeletehave a good rest of your weekend :)
Hi ZenPenguin,
DeleteReally glad you’re enjoying the recent uploads, it’s been a fun run of sets to put together, and hearing that they’re landing well is encouraging.
As for the chat section, there’s no firm update yet. I’d love to see it revived too, but it needs a bit of behind‑the‑scenes stability before it can return in a way that’s actually useful and not just another thing to constantly fix. It’s still on the radar, just not ready to reopen.
Cheers.
Fantastic selection. I started listening and couldn't stop till the final song, Add the Buddy Rich Big Band selection I finally had a chance to hear, as well, and it made for a fantastic Saturday evening. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Richard,
DeleteWhen a set keeps you listening straight through to the final track, you know it’s doing exactly what it should. Those sessions have such drive and colour; they turn a Saturday night into something special.
It wonderful to hear that the selection hit the spot for you.
Cheers.
