The Early Brit Girls series, released by Rock History between 2013 and 2017, is one of the most rewarding surveys of British female pop from the years immediately preceding the Beatles era. Issued across four double-CD volumes, the collection traces the development of British girl singers during a period when home-grown popular music was evolving rapidly under the influence of American rock and roll, traditional pop, jazz and skiffle.

Drawing heavily from original singles released on labels such as Decca, HMV, Columbia, Pye, Parlophone and Fontana, the series showcases both familiar names and performers whose recording careers lasted only a handful of releases. The emphasis is firmly on the original British recordings of the late 1950s and early 1960s, preserving a fascinating chapter of music history that is often overshadowed by the beat groups that followed.

The early volumes concentrate on the transition from traditional vocal pop towards a more youthful and contemporary sound. Lush orchestral arrangements, sophisticated ballads and American-inspired rockers sit side by side, revealing the variety that existed within British popular music before the arrival of Merseybeat. As the series progresses, listeners encounter increasingly confident performances, stronger rhythmic backing and a growing sense of the distinctive character that would come to define British pop during the decade.
