Elvis Costello - Just Like Candy, His Most Underrated (A Butterboy Compilation) (5 x CD's)
Declan Patrick MacManus, OBE (born 25 August 1954), better known by his stage name Elvis Costello, is a British pop musician, singer, songwriter, composer, record producer, author, television presenter, and occasional actor. He began his career as part of London's pub rock scene in the early 1970's and later became associated with the first wave of the British punk and new wave movement that emerged in the mid-to-late 1970's. His critically acclaimed debut album, My Aim Is True, was released in 1977. Shortly after recording it, he formed the Attractions as his backing band. His second album, This Year's Model, was released in 1978, and was ranked number 11 by Rolling Stone on its list of the best albums from 1967–1987. His third album, Armed Forces, was released in 1979, and features his highest-charting single "Oliver's Army" (number 2 in the UK). His first three albums all appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Costello and the Attractions toured and recorded together for the better part of a decade, though differences between them caused a split by 1986. Much of Costello's work since has been as a solo artist, though reunions with members of the Attractions have been credited to the group over the years. Costello's lyrics employ a wide vocabulary and frequent wordplay. His music has drawn on many diverse genres; one critic described him as a "pop encyclopedia", able to "reinvent the past in his own image". He has won multiple awards in his career, including a Grammy Award, and has twice been nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male Singer. In 2003, Costello and the Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Costello number 80 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. All this without a number One Hit. (Highest position 2)
Elvis Costello is the most underappreciated artist of all time. His material sounds so sophisticated, eclectic and fresh even after almost 40 years. It's difficult to limit the number underrated songs by this incredibly prolific songwriter. Most of his songs are underrated. Roy Orbison thought enough of Costello's 'worst album' to cover "The Comedians". (Wikipedia)
Elvis Costello who turns 64 in August and has been around for 40+ years creating great music. He is one of my favorite artists. He makes me laugh, he makes me cry, he makes me think and he makes me believe what he sings. He is a brilliant artist as a singer songwriter but is also a magical interpreter of others' songs. Here are deep cuts from his catalog presented in date order (except track 1). Enjoy these 108 tracks.

Well that was a long overdue exercise! Welldone Butterboy, EC is bewilderingly under-appreciated. I've read some fans completely dropping him after The Delivery Man, and then North. To me, it made me persist with him - don't we really want an artist to be restless and unsatisfied? You may only have one from that album here, but I think it's incredible as a whole. Thank you very much for this!
ReplyDeleteHi Ace F'really,
DeleteThank you for popping in and leaving a comment. Appreciated.
As I mentioned one of my favorite artists. I think to follow EC throughout his career is simply rewarding whatever the grove is that he concentrates on at the time. His output is jaw dropping for me. I wont give up on him. He will surprise again and again.
I am happy to expand my selection if you have any suggestions. Maybe a 6th Track list including his bonus materials.
Cheers.
This is outstanding...thank you. I was wondering if it might be possible to revisit Part 1?
