VA - The World Needs Changing, Street Funk & Jazz Grooves 1967-1976 [2013]

OBSCURE 60's & 70's SOUL  and FUNK

VA - The World Needs Changing, Street Funk & Jazz Grooves 1967-1976 [2013]

The late 60s were a time of incredible change in black American Music. The World Needs Changing reflects the growing confidence of black music in a decade of change. Soul, jazz and funk was a mirror onto the black urban world, and represented a growing confidence and sophistication. Records like Lonnie Liston Smith's 'Expansions' (presented here in it's rare 7 inch version) or Leon Thomas' 'Just in Time to See the Sun' show Jazz musicians reaching for the discos without losing their spiritual self. Gil Scott Heron, Esther Marrow, Darrow Fletcher and our super rare title track show the political struggle continued to bubble away. The majority of the music made at the time was still aimed firmly at the feet, and there are rare collectors items by the Original Soul Patrol, Ceaser 830, club classics by the Willard Posey Reunion and Little Eva Harris whose medley of 'Get Ready/ Uptight' has been massive in London for a couple of years now.

This is an excellent compilation of soul and funky jazz that contains many rare tracks. If you buy a lot of CD compilations like I do, you often end up with some songs you've already heard, but that's not the case with this collection. The compilers have truly unearthed some rare but fabulous songs. This may qualify as a "theme" compilation of sorts, but even without the context of being recorded during a period of time when (to quote the liner notes) "black American culture went through convulsions while attempting to consolidate and improve on the successes achieved by the Civil Rights movement", these songs are all keepers. The liner notes boast that "the sound of Black America during this period (1967-1976) was never more exciting" --- and I would agree. That was a very productive and creative time for music, particularly in genres such as soul, funk, and jazz. The compilers call the music on this CD "a stroll through the evolution of the music of the time, taking in records with a political or spiritual message, and some, frankly, aimed at those looking for a good time." That pretty much sums it up. A wonderful CD that will appeal to fans of obscure 1960's and 1970's soul and funk. (Amazon)
