VA - Midwest Funk, Funk 45s from Tornado Alley [2004] + VA - Texas Funk 1968-1975 - Black Gold From The Lone Star State [2005]

MIDWEST & TEXAS FUNK

VA - Midwest Funk, Funk 45s from Tornado Alley [2004] + VA - Texas Funk 1968-1975 - Black Gold from The Lone Star State [2005]

The definitive anthology of the Midwestern states' 60's and 70's funk scenes." "Like the critically acclaimed Texas Funk album, Midwest Funk is an additional collection of rare, collectible and previously-unreleased funk 45s. This time collector Malcolm Catto and I drove 1000s of miles across the endless cornfields of the American Midwest, a vast expanse of farmland that covers the region between the Rockies in the West and the Appalachians in the East. Summer is typically stifling hot and winter extremely harsh -- Tornado Alley also runs through the entire region. We worked hard but were lucky too -- not only did we avoid the tornadoes, but we also found some incredibly rare 45s and some amazing unreleased master tapes. And we've presented the best of them here in this CD/double LP. It was great to be the first people to meet and hang out with the often-bootlegged Soul Toranodoes, guzzle whiskey in Henry Peters' basement, and chill out in one of Jessie Wallace's vintage white Cadillacs. We chatted about their wild gigs and grueling recording sessions in the '60s & '70s, they gave us amazing photos, told us fascinating stories and shared priceless anecdotes filled with their inspirations and their failures. Their life story in music was often captured on one solitary, but brilliant, 45, and that musical story is told here." (forcedexposure.com)

"Another collection of lost funk treasures from UK-based Jazzman Records, and its fanatical honchos Gerald 'Jazzman' Short and Malcolm Catto. Texas Funk, now available domestically for the first time, is the definitive look into the funk hotbed that was the late '60s and early '70s Lone Star State. From tough, urban centers such as Dallas and Houston, to the sparsely- populated dots of Pasadena and Longview, one message rings clear -- this expanse offered up musical hopefuls who offered 'black gold' equal or better to their major label peers. Included within are some of the most sought-after deep funk tracks known in the collecting world. There are verifiable funk instrumentals, vocal masterpieces, heavy duty interpolations, and unique covers of classics by The Isley Brothers, James Brown and The Meters. Twenty-one gems in all, Texas Funk is a sure shot." (forcedexposure.com)

There are more to come from this series of obscure Funk. Stay tuned.

  1. Many Thanks... Looking forward... BTW I just saw something new out of The D last night, you may dig it. Was on YOUTUBE, "Detroit: One Nation Under A Groove". Mike Ellison and his band, helped some local kids, cover P-Funk. It's pretty cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WtoZvK1kB4&list=PLbiJ0SVW50QvIP8pyjBkPX3QMPzT_vgzg&index=33&t=0s
