COWBELLS

VA - Rockin' Them Cowbells (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Originally the cowbell is named after the bell that is hung around a cow’s neck to indicate its whereabouts but can also be used as a percussive instrument that is usually hit with a wooden rod. Although cowbells first appeared in American hillbilly music in the 1920s, they have also been used as an instrument in more recent popular music. The cowbell is an instrument that has been used since the beginning of agriculture for communication and entertainment. It is a unique piece of equipment that has been used in many different ways throughout the years. The cowbell is not just a popular instrument to add jazz-like rhythms, but also an iconic piece of rock and roll percussion. It has been used in the many classic rock songs. The cowbell has become a popular symbol of rhythm throughout history. It also is not just a single instrument but can be paired with many types of instruments or even played alone to create different effects. Drummers with different styles use the cowbell’s unique sound to their advantage.

Here are 60 Rockin' Cowbell tracks that features cowbells used to great effect, creating a unique element to the songs they are played in. Enjoy!

Here is a funny Saturday Night Live clip where Will Ferrell is helping raise awareness of the cowbells undervalued potential.    https://youtu.be/cVsQLlk-T0s

  2. You have such brilliant ideas for compilations!

I'm intrigued to know if you can just think of all these tracks, stored in your head, or whether you needed to do a lot of research to gather so many.

    1. Hi abudaiyo.
Thank you for your kind words. All good compilation requires a good musical memory and a lot of research. I wish I could just remember every track first time around but after seeking more tracks than my original list I must then listen to the tracks many times over before they are posted. It's always a labour of love.
      Cheers.

  3. Nice idea! First song, that came to mind, was Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick & Tich - Save Me, one of the earliest records I bought (yes, I am that old ;-))

    1. Hi Dr. Fu Man Chu.
Glad you like the concept. Hopefully you will play this set often.
There are many more tracks that have cowbells, but I struggled to find more that featured the cowbells in rock. Thanks for the Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick & Tich track.
      Cheers.
