VA - You Better Believe Rare and Modern Soul Gems Vol. 01+ Vol. 02 [2006] (2 x CDs)
Over the years, I have purchased many, many soul compilations. My interest has mainly been sixties R&B and soul. More recently, thanks largely to the comprehensive Complete Stax/Volt Singles boxes and the Rhino Soul Hits of the 70s I have really developed a deep appreciation for what is now acknowledged to be the last great period of soul music. Yes, it was more sophisticated, but there were really many fine songwriters, producers, arrangers and singers that were making some really sublime music during this time period. So, all that to get to this collection of songs from this same time period (1969-1979). These are songs that missed entirely in the U.S. but did attract the British dance crowd and have been "collectables" in their original 45 incarnation. The quality, pacing, sound quality and packaging on this collection is 1st rate, placing it right up there with Rhino and Ace/Kent. It's an import, not easy to find, and a bit pricey, but well worth the effort.... Exceptional compilation, many songs issued for the first time on CD (Amazon).
