This box set collects all of Gerald Wilson's extraordinary recordings for the Pacific Jazz and World Pacific labels between 1960 and 1969. Gerald Wilson was a jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader who was influenced by Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Stravinsky, and Debussy. He had a distinctive style of writing and arranging that combined big band swing, Latin rhythms, blues, funk, and modern harmony. He also incorporated elements of popular music of the time, such as rock, soul, and R&B. He worked with some of the finest jazz musicians of his era, such as Bud Shank, Harold Land, George Duke, Bobby Hutcherson, Roy Ayers, Joe Pass, and many others. The box set contains 96 tracks that showcase Wilson’s versatility, creativity, and elegance as a musical visionary. Some of the highlights include “Blues for Yna Yna”, “Viva Tirado”, “The Golden Sword”, “California Soul”, “Light My Fire”, “Down Here on the Ground”, and “Aquarius”. The box set also includes a 24-page booklet with liner notes by Ted Gioia and rare photos. The box set was released by Mosaic Records in 2000 as a limited edition of 5,000 copies. It received critical acclaim from jazz critics and fans alike. It is considered one of the most important and comprehensive documentations of Wilson’s career and legacy.
