Jellyfish - Fan Club [2002] (4 x CDs) + Bonus

JELLYFISH

Jellyfish - Fan Club [2002] (4 x CDs) + Bonus

Fan Club is a box set of demos, rarities and live performances by American power pop band Jellyfish. The box set was released in limited quantity by Not Lame Recordings in August 2002. Fan Club contains demos from the band's 1990 debut Bellybutton and their 1993 sophomore follow-up Spilt Milk. The box set also contains recordings of live performances, rehearsals, compilation track appearances, and interview snippets.

Label owner Bruce Brodeen worked on the project for over 15 months, and to complete it, sought a bank loan that exceeded $100,000 (equivalent to $170,000 in 2022). The remastering alone cost over $10,000. Not Lame amassed over 1,600 advance orders from fans, while another 3,400 advance orders came from distributors. Three pressings (8,000 copies) sold out by the end of the year. The set went out of print within months due to the expiration of the label's rights to the Jellyfish catalog, making it a collector's item. (Wikipedia)

The title of Fan Club is entirely accurate -- this, more than most box sets -- is one for the fans. And Jellyfish does have fans: for a band that didn't sell many records, they sure gained a lot of fans, many of them starting their own post-power pop group after hearing 1990's Bellybutton and 1993's Spilt Milk. Those fans spread the gospel and followed solo careers -- Jason Falkner became a cult favorite in his own right -- but they still hungered for more Jellyfish, which they finally received in the summer of 2002 thanks to the power pop specialists at Not Lame, who assembled Fan Club with the assistance of all of the band and their soundman, Shalom Aberle. This is a release that was deliberately targeted at a fan base -- it contains nothing but unreleased material over its four discs, filled with memorabilia and memories from the band, and pressed in a limited number. That may mean that it will hardly play outside the hardcore fans but, then again, it's not intended to, either. And those hardcore fans will delight with this set, as it's filled with demos for songs for both albums (plus unreleased songs), live songs (taken from concerts and television broadcasts), rehearsals, compilation track appearances, and interview snippets tying it all together. It's an archival piece done right -- it is an exhaustive journey through the vaults, lovingly prepared. (AMG review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

This box set is awesome!  If you enjoyed the Beach Boys, Queen, or ELO, you'll love this band. Second, their lyrics are fantastic. Think Elvis Costello, Tom Waits or the Beatles (I really relate their sophomore album Spilt Milk to Sgt. Peppers, lyrically and stylistically). Which brings me to the last reason that I'll list here: their style. Jellyfish made their albums exactly as they wanted, not caving in to the grunge popularity of the time, or really the popularity of any one style. Although their debt to some of the forementioned bands is evident, they do have their own sound, which you can hear in full listening to the lush recordings of the two studio albums they left us. For any fan of this extinct yet ahead of their time band. If you aren't a Jellyfish fan yet, listen to the album Spilt Milk, and you will be. (Amazon)

    1. Absolutely true, See Hear Podcast.
It baffles me how they are basically Cult status now. They had a fabulous sound and great songs.
      Cheers.

  3. Wow , thanks for this - so glad I was able to see them live (still have my Love Jellyfish Style shirt). While they only had the two albums, I think a lot of us followed the Jellyfish family tree, past and future - The Grays, Umajets, Imperial Drag, TV Eyes, etc

  4. great one thanks! i did a ton of graphic design work for Bruce/Not Lame, but i didn't work on this one (tho i did design the semi-recent Jellyfish book 'A Brighter Day'!) but i remember him telling me these details at the time.....NO one but Bruce would've had the dedication and passion to put this project together....

A wonderful collection indeed. Thanks for sharing. I don't have that book and your artwork. It would be great to share if you have it.

  5. My cousin worked as an A&R man for a record label, and he gave me a CD of 'Spilt Milk' when it came out -- he thought it was going to be a smash hit. Well, the album was a hit with me anyway, and I've enjoyed it for some 30 years now. It's perfect: catchy, witty, creative, sonically pristine. Plus the song "He's My Best Friend" still makes me laugh after all this time. Glad to see Jellyfish getting some love here!

  6. Sunshine kisses... didn't miss their party.
I believe this was the only box release on them?
    Delighted it is archived here.
I just once saw it on the shelf at a producers home studio in '06.
I could not get him to allow me to take it home to upload.
Despite holding on to a few of my JF promo singles near a year.
    I did eventually retrieve : )
He is no longer with us, a young man of 53. Just married, then covid in 2020.
His new wife also covid struck, returned home from their hospital stay without him.
    R.I.P. Brian...
His notoriety spawned from his association with one of my favorite American rock bands, King's X (Hendrix Experience meets Beatles... not another like them).
He took credit on the jewel 'Ear Candy'.
