FACES
Faces - 1970-1975, You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything... [2015] + Faces at the BBC, Complete BBC Concert & Session Recordings (1970-1973) [2024] (13 x CDs)
Faces are an English rock band formed in London in 1969. It was formed by members of Small Faces after lead singer and guitarist Steve Marriott left to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces—Ian McLagan (keyboards), Ronnie Lane (electric bass, vocals), and Kenney Jones (drums and percussion)—were joined by guitarist Ronnie Wood and singer Rod Stewart, both from the Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed Faces.
The band had a unique arrangement, as Rod Stewart had signed a separate solo recording contract with the Mercury label shortly before joining the group, which was signed to Warner Bros. Band members often contributed to Stewart's solo albums as contract players, and Faces live shows of the period would feature as much of Stewart's solo material as that of the band, which later fueled tensions amongst them when they began to effectively be viewed as Stewart's 'backing band'. The group lacked a single main songwriter as from the beginning each member would work in tandem to offer songs for each of their albums (Stewart and Wood most often wrote together as a duo, as did Lane and Wood, while Lane would usually contribute at least one solo composition per album). While Stewart was the primary lead singer, both Lane and Wood would also sing lead vocals on several tracks (Lane usually sang lead on his own solo compositions). Their first two albums, First Step (1970) and Long Player (1971), lacked a hit single, but their third album, 1971's A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse, bolstered by the success of Stewart's solo work, became a worldwide hit, peaking at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and number 6 on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart and spawning the band's first hit single, "Stay with Me".
Tensions in the band came to a head during the recording of their fourth (and final) studio album, 1973's Ooh La La. Ronnie Lane, who was a founder member of Small Faces, left over his diminished role in the band in 1973, and was replaced by Tetsu Yamauchi on bass. The band continued to tour throughout 1974 and 1975, releasing a live album, Coast to Coast: Overture and Beginners, in 1974 that was jointly credited to Rod Stewart/Faces. Ronnie Wood also began to drift from the group over this period, releasing two solo albums of his own, and appearing as a guest musician on two Rolling Stones albums and joining them on tour in 1975. He was briefly augmented by Jesse Ed Davis on guitars before the band broke up at the end of 1975.
The Faces and Small Faces were jointly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Stewart was scheduled to perform with the rest of the band but was unable to do so at the last minute due to illness; he was replaced by Hucknall. In 2021, Jones, Stewart, and Wood reunited to record a new album under the Faces grouping. (Wikipedia)
Faces - 1970-1975, You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything... [2015]
The Faces albums were scheduled for expanded reissues in 2008, roughly four years after the release of the definitive rarities-laden box set Five Guys Walk into a Bar..., but those plans were scrapped, and the albums remained untouched for the next seven years. After that long wait came You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything: 1970-1975, a five-disc box that contains expanded versions of the four Faces studio LPs -- 1970's First Step, the twin 1971 masterpieces Long Player and A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...to a Blind Horse, 1972's Ooh La La -- along with a disc of non-LP singles. These aren't quite the track listings from 2008 but they're close enough and, more importantly, they offer a bunch of songs that were not on Five Guys. While A Nod Is as Good as a Wink... is expanded by two BBC Sessions also heard on the box, the rest are given substantial additions. First Step has outtakes of "Behind the Sun" and "Mona: The Blues," alternates of "Flying" and "Nobody Knows," plus a BBC Session of "Shake, Shudder, Shiver"; Long Player has outtakes of "Whole Lotta Woman" and the instrumental "Sham-Mozzal," an alternate of "Tell Everyone," and two selections from a November 1970 show at the Fillmore East ("Too Much Woman [For a Henpecked Man]" and "Love in Vain"); Ooh La La has rehearsal versions of "Borstal Boys," "Silicone Grown," and "Glad and Sorry" along with a live version of "Jealous Guy" from the 1973 Reading Festival; finally, "I Wish It Would Rain (With a Trumpet)" from 1973's Reading Festival is added to the fifth disc. Part of the appeal of Five Guys Walk into a Bar... was how it captured the rangy, rowdy mess of the Faces at their peak and, to its credit, this box doesn't attempt to replicate the sound of a never-ending party. Instead, it offers good-sounding copies of the canon, supplemented by tracks that can't be heard elsewhere. That's good bang for the buck and a good enough reason for the die-hard fans to pony up for this music one more time. (AllMusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine)
Faces at the BBC, Complete BBC Concert & Session Recordings (1970-1973) [2024]
This is a delightful discovery for anyone, even if you’re just getting acquainted with the Faces. As someone who has recently stumbled upon this gem, I can confirm that this set perfectly captures the high-energy performances of The Faces, (thanks to John Peel that many of these performances were recorded for us to enjoy). Over the eight discs, we hear Rod Stewart at his absolute finest. I truly believe he was never better than on these recordings. This is not to take away from the other band members, who are also universally excellent.
It’s a fantastic journey into the heart of rock music from the early '70s. This box set is just like opening a time capsule. The recordings from 1970 to 1973 capture the band in their prime, with all the raw energy and spontaneity that made live performances so special. The sound quality is superb, making it easy to imagine yourself in the audience, feeling the excitement and the vibe of those times. What really struck me was the variety and evolution in their music. Each track offers something different, showcasing the band’s versatility and creativity. These live recordings are captivating, giving you a sense of their dynamic stage presence and the electric atmosphere of their concerts. It’s clear that the Faces were not just playing music; they were living it.
“Faces - At the BBC” is more than just a compilation of songs; it’s a celebration of a band that left a lasting impact on rock music. It’s a joy to listen to and a great way to immerse yourself in the magic of the Faces. Give it a try, and let the music take you on a memorable journey. (B)

Oh My...Love these guys..I remember stopping by to visit mom and dad and they were listening to Rod The Mod belting out big band tunes( years after the faces of course). I asked if they knew about his pre-disco rocking days. They didn't. But I did. Gonna blast this one out. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHave fun with these, RichardR.
DeleteI am sure these will bring back a lot of fond memories.
Cheers.
Good one, Butter! I remember that I saw the Small Faces with Rod in 1971 (it says so on the ticket stub), but I don't quite remember the show itself. Had a great time, however... Thanks, dood.
ReplyDeleteHi slr in tx.
DeleteEnjoy!
I never saw The Faces, but I have great time listening to their music.
Cheers.
By coincidence tomorrow the 3rd Dec is my 53rd wedding anniversary. On that Friday morning in 1971 I bought my wife a copy of Every Picture Tells a Story. We have followed Rod and the Faces for ever. I saw the Small Faces once and Rod many times. Thanks for this new Beeb collection. Ah the good old days eh?
ReplyDeleteHi lemonflag.
Delete53 years! That's truly remarkable. It sounds like you and your wife have shared a wonderful journey together, filled with great music and memories. "Every Picture Tells a Story" is such a classic album, and it's amazing that it has been a part of your lives for so long. Rod Stewart and The Faces have certainly left an indelible mark on rock history.
The good old days indeed! Music is timeless. Here's to many more years of love, music, and cherished memories for you both. Cheers to your anniversary!

ReplyDeleteTC you have reminded me of a joke by Tommy Cooper.
DeleteA man walked into a bar. Ouch. it was an iron bar.
Brilliant stuff! We shall never see their like again. So glad I lived through these times as a teenager!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Montax.
DeleteEnjoy the memories.
Cheers.
YES!!!! A while ago the YouTube algorithm pushed a video of the Faces' performance on Sounds for Saturday (April '72) into my recommendations. I've never bothered with the Faces - Rod's disco days are one of the horrors of my teenage years ... - but this show just blew me away. Have been listening to their other BBC shows on YT, just amazing. I cannot tell how much I am looking forward to listening to the BBC set!!!
ReplyDeleteHi albrecht koschnik.
DeleteThe Faces' performance on "Sounds for Saturday" in April '72 is indeed legendary. It's fascinating how a single performance can change our perception of a band. Rod Stewart's disco phase might have been a tough pill to swallow, but his earlier work with The Faces is pure rock 'n' roll gold. The BBC set is a real treat. There's something magical about those live recordings that capture the raw energy and spirit of the band. Enjoy diving into those amazing performances!
Cheers.
