PART 1

VA - The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records Volume 1 (1917 - 32) [2013] (800 tracks) + Artwork

Paramount Records was established in 1917 by a Wisconsin furniture company, initially with modest ambitions and little knowledge of the record business. Their early mission was to produce records as cheaply as possible with whatever talent was available, which nearly led to bankruptcy by 1921. However, a radical shift occurred in 1922 when the company's white owners decided to focus on selling music by black artists to black audiences, a market known as "Race Records." This strategy, along with a combination of luck and the hiring of Mayo Williams, the first black executive at a white-owned recording company, transformed Paramount's fortunes.

Williams, a Chicago South-Sider, NFL player, bootlegger, impresario, and Brown University graduate, became a key figure in promoting jazz and blues. Despite his controversial motto, "screw the artist before he can screw you," Williams played a vital role in scouting talent and recording early Paramount records in Chicago, inadvertently documenting the sounds of the Great Migration. By 1927, Paramount had become a leading label in the Race Records field, selling hundreds of thousands of records. Although the company ceased operations in 1932, it had amassed a remarkable roster of performers, including early jazz titans, vaudevillian songsters, solo guitar bluesmen, theater blues divas, gospel groups, and string bands.

The story of Paramount Records is a mirror of America's own history, reflecting the waves of modernism after World War I and the experiences of the Great Migration. The label's recordings captured the full range of American cultural expression during the 1920s and early 1930s, from parlor singers to blues belters. This narrative is preserved through a curated exhibit that includes handcrafted packaging, hardcover books, 180g vinyl records, extensive digital tracks, and original graphic art. The exhibit serves as a tribute to the design eras of the recordings, embodying the unique vision and design sensibility of co-producer Jack White, who shares a connection with Paramount's origins in the furniture-making industry. Jack's  pre-White  Stripes  days  were  as  a  master  furniture  maker's  apprentice  and   then  as  proprietor  of  his  own  chair  upholstery  business.  Had  things  gone  differently,   he  might  still  be  operating  Third  Man  Upholstery  there  in  Detroit.  (His  upholstery   workshop  still  takes  significant  pride  of  place  there  at  his  compound  in  Nashville!)   Jack's  unique  vision,  strong  design  sensibility,  and  love  of  the  tactile  richness  of   hand-worked  wood  and  metal  are  soaked  into  every  inch  of  this  project. By preserving and restoring music, we ensure that future generations can appreciate the rich history and cultural significance of these recordings. It's a labor of love that requires expertise, patience, and a deep respect for the music.

In essence, Paramount Records' story is a testament to its role in capturing and preserving American art and culture, making it one of the most significant archives in the history of music.

Jack White (The White Stripes) Label - Third Man Records, in collaboration with the late John Fahey's label Revenant Records and lead music researcher Alex van der Tuuk, prepared and released these huge retrospectives of the legendary Paramount Records label. These two editions is simply a masterpiece of art.  The preservation and rediscovery of Blues and Jazz history is a meticulous endeavor that prompts questions about the motivations behind purchasing such collections. Are buyers genuinely interested in the music itself, or are they seeking to own something unique and authentic? It is somewhat ironic that these records, originally produced as cheaply as possible by artists who often earned very little, are now considered highly valuable. (B)
