EXOTIC BEATLES
VA - The Exotic Beatles Part 1-4 [1993-2011] (4 x CDs)
The Exotic Beatles series is a fascinating collection of four CDs that reimagine Beatles classics showcasing unconventional and often bizarre covers of Beatles songs from artists around the world. Released by Exotica Records, these compilations bring together artists from around the globe, offering a kaleidoscope of interpretations that range from quirky to downright bizarre.
The first volume, The Exotic Beatles: Part One, sets the tone with its diverse lineup, featuring renditions like William Shatner's spoken-word take on "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and a Latin-infused "Eleanor Rigby." This album introduces listeners to the series' playful and experimental spirit, blending humor with musical ingenuity.
Part Two expands on this concept, delivering even more eccentric covers. Highlights include a Cockney version of "Yesterday" and a polka rendition of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." The album showcases the versatility of Beatles songs, proving that their melodies transcend genres and cultural boundaries.
The third installment, Part Three, takes the eccentricity up a notch. Tracks like a speed-metal version of "Yesterday" and a soprano's operatic take on "Ticket to Ride" push the boundaries of creativity. This volume emphasizes the universal appeal of the Beatles' music, as artists from various backgrounds reinterpret their work in unexpected ways.
Finally, Part Four: Plastic Soul brings the series to a triumphant close. Featuring contributions from countries like Russia, Turkey, and Mexico, this album highlights the global reach of the Beatles' legacy. With its mix of traditional instruments and modern twists, it encapsulates the series' ethos of celebrating diversity through music.
Together, the Exotic Beatles CDs offer a unique listening experience that honors the Beatles' timeless influence while embracing the weird and wonderful. The series is celebrated for its playful and experimental approach, offering a fresh perspective on the Beatles' timeless songs. It appeals to both Beatles enthusiasts and fans of kitsch, highlighting the enduring power of their music to inspire creativity and reinterpretation. (B)

I very much enjoyed this trip through the many interpretations of Beatles music. For every hilariously bad track there was some inspired take on some other song. I have always preferred cover songs to try something new rather than simply presenting an attempt at a carbon copy of the originals.
ReplyDeleteOne interpretation that quickly comes to my mind of a Beatles song that would easily fit your collection is Wolfgang Dauner's take of "A day in the Life " from his trippy "The Oimels " LP released back in the day.
Cheers

Hi Daniel.
DeleteI like your perspective. The joy of cover songs is in their ability to reinterpret, surprise, and sometimes even reinvent a familiar classic. It’s always refreshing to hear a new spin on Beatles music, whether wildly inventive or subtly transformative. Wolfgang Dauner’s A Day in the Life from The Oimels album is a great suggestion. But I point out this post above is not my compilation it was released by Exotica Records.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy the musical journey.
Cheers.
