LESTER YOUNG with COUNT BASSIE

Lester Young with Count Basie - Classic Columbia, Okeh and Vocalion (1936-1940) [2008] (4 x CDs)

Before looking at titles or dates, the sound of Classic Columbia Okeh and Vocalion 1936–1940 settles in almost immediately. There is a lightness to it, a sense of space that feels different from many recordings of the same period. Even within full band arrangements, nothing feels crowded. The music moves with an ease that reveals itself over time rather than all at once.

These sides place Lester Young within the orbit of Count Basie and his orchestra during the late 1930s. The Basie band provides a steady foundation, rhythm section locked into a relaxed but precise swing, while Young’s tenor lines drift just above it. His phrasing rarely pushes, instead it seems to arrive slightly behind the beat, giving the music its distinct shape.

The sequencing brings together sessions originally issued across Columbia, Okeh, and Vocalion, and hearing them in this collected form highlights how consistent that approach remained. Tracks led by the full orchestra sit alongside smaller group recordings without disrupting the flow. The transitions feel natural, as if the same conversation continues in different rooms.

What becomes noticeable after a while is the balance between structure and freedom. The arrangements are clear, often built around strong riffs, yet within that framework the soloists move with remarkable flexibility. Young’s tone stays cool and unforced, while Basie’s piano appears in brief, economical statements that anchor the performance without drawing attention away from the ensemble.

There is no dramatic shift as the set progresses. Instead, the recordings deepen the same mood, refining the interplay between soloist and band. The rhythm section keeps everything grounded, allowing the melodic lines to stretch and settle without hurry.

Heard in sequence, the set feels like a continuous stretch of late 1930s studio time, where the goal was not to capture a moment of intensity but to maintain a feeling. It leaves behind a clear impression of musicians who understood how to let the music breathe. (B)

  1. Hello, I recently came across your blog and was curious if you had ever come across the Time life sounds of the sixties sets? I've been trying to find mp3 files for that set for quite some time.
