The foundation of rock music, debateably, is acoustic music. When many singer-songwriters sit down to work on a song or an idea to demo, they generally use an acoustic guitar. Sometimes these songs and bands turn them into electric music, but sometimes a song is so good that a band or artist will leave them as is and thus, becomes acoustic rock. Sometimes, musicians sound better making acoustic rock. Bands outside the Unplugged realm generally don't lean towards acoustic rock, but those who do have found success across multiple formats. Also, the best acoustic rock bands sometimes do go electric, but that doesn't change that they are also considered acoustic music.
Unplugging isn’t easy. Take someone who usually plays an electric guitar, pull the plug and thrust an acoustic in their hands, and they’ll feel naked.
Where’s all the lovely mistake-hiding distortion? All the squalling feedback and lovely, comforting effects pedals? Playing an acoustic is an exercise in precision, clarity, and more often than not, great song writing. Playing acoustic arrangements can breathe new life into familiar songs or give a unique twist to a cover, and show off a piece of song writing perfection.
These tracks are by no means the only great acoustic rock tracks available and I am sure you can recommend many others that excite you. This is the first volume of acoustic rock songs I have put together for sharing. There are others in the work for another time. But as you know my music tastes are diverse and there are other music flavours that will be posting first.
In the meantime please enjoy these 50 tracks. As usual, maybe you will hear a song or artist you haven’t heard before and find yourself pleasantly surprised, although there are many well-known tracks here which you may not have heard for a long while. Enjoy!
