EASY LISTENING

VA - Easy Listening Music Vol. 01 (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

Easy listening (sometimes known as mood music) is a popular music genre and radio format that was most popular during the 1950s to 1970s. It is related to middle-of-the-road (MOR) music and encompasses instrumental recordings of standards, hit songs and popular non-rock vocals. It was differentiated from the mostly instrumental beautiful music format by its variety of styles, including a percentage of vocals, arrangements and tempos to fit various day parts during the broadcast day.  Easy listening music is often confused with elevator music ("Muzak"), or lounge music, but while it was popular in some of the same venues it bore only modest resemblance to the background sound of this kind of music.  A significant portion of easy listening music is purely instrumental and included some big band and orchestral arrangements of standards, themes from movies, bossa nova hits and small instrumental ensembles playing instrumental versions of popular songs, including light jazz and even some soft rock. However, it was distinguished by slower tempo, and the large prominence of strings. When reed instruments such as saxophones were employed, they were used in a gentle, as opposed to brash, tone. <i>Music Term: Easy listening music, A genre of popular music that is meant to be soothing and relaxing to the listener. Other genres such as rock and jazz tend to be more aggressive in nature and demands more attention from the listener. Easy listening music tends to be more in the background and sets a warm ambiance that is easy to relax in. Easy listening music can be characterized by moderate to slow tempo arrangements with full and lush instrumentation typically with large string sections or synthesized string sounds. This music is most often instrumental (sometimes with a full chorus) but typically not solo vocal. Much of the easy listening music comes from rock, country & western, and jazz genres that are arranged in the easy listening style. The melody and harmonic structure of the original music is kept intact with the overall style replaced with easy listening music characteristics. Although there is a large audience for easy listening music, most music critics dismiss this genre and do not consider it as "serious" music. (Artopium.com)

I still love the melodic and decidedly less rhythmic sounds of easy listening. Those great sweeping washes of melody do relax. In most cases this easy listening set of songs has been prepared with an easy listening orchestral piece followed by an easy listening vocal song. Enjoy!
