Bruce Springsteen - The Lost Masters (23 x CD's)

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - LOST MASTERS

Bruce Springsteen - The Lost Masters (23 CD's)

Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen (born September 23, 1949) is an American rock singer, songwriter and guitarist. Nicknamed "The Boss", he has released 21 studio albums during a career spanning six decades, most of which feature his backing band, the E Street Band. Springsteen is an originator of heartland rock, a genre combining mainstream rock music with poetic and socially conscious lyrics that feature narratives primarily concerning working-class American life. He is known for his descriptive lyrics and energetic concerts, with performances that can last for more than four hours.

In the spring of 1996, word quickly spread of a 19-CD set called "The Lost Masters" consisting of studio outtakes, home demos, and rehearsal sessions from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band from the years 1977-1983. In addition to the 19 discs, two "Best of" sets would also be released and would include bonus tracks not found elsewhere in the set. The discs were to be released individually in groups of five or so and the first five surfaced in early summer. The CDs can basically be broken down into 5 segments: Darkness outtakes (2 CDs), River outtakes (2 CDs), home demos (4 CDs), rehearsal sessions (5 CDs), and Hollywood Hills garage tapes (3 CDs). Rounding out the set are the complete Nebraska sessions, Born in the USA outtakes, and "Big Expendables", which consists of studio outtakes from The River, home demos, and rehearsal sessions.

1981-82 acoustic home demos
The artwork claims these tracks date from early 1983 - this probably isn't correct, and they actually date from September 1981 thru May 1982. "Wages Of Sin", for example, is at an embryonic state here, but the final take was recorded May 10 1982, therefore pushing the demo take back before that date.

  1. Whew; what a set - wow! If I didn't have it already, I'd be downloading it right now... thanks, Butter! A very formative teacher in high school opened my ears to Bruce (and a number of artists), 1976-78, and I've been fond of him ever since... favoring mostly his 1973-84 work. Hearing him and his band at work is fascinatingly educational, much as we find in the best Beatles boot: a look behind the curtain, a private seat onstage while the band explores and rehearses...

    1. I never really got into Bruce when I first herd him. I think that when I heard the Nebraska album I was hooked on him and began to reevaluate his work. I think he is a great story teller and has a way of phrasing that makes you listen. Thanks for you comment despite already picking this up previously. Cheers, Aging Child.

  2. It took a "deep cuts" music-loving teacher to awaken an interest in Springsteen / E Street (and in others, from Alan Parsons / Eric Woolfson to Jackson Browne to Leonard Cohen, and more). While I was dating her, before we married, the sweet and lovely goodwife played me Springsteen's track "The River", and - being the storyteller myself - I enjoyed (and ached for) the sweet/sad/gritty tale wrapped up his lyrics, in a song of his I'd somehow never heard before.

Later, we found she was pregnant, and we had to get married... and life unintentionally imitated art; and since then, the song has had even richer meaning to me. On his 1975-85 live album, his autobiographical prelude to that song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gg3DleXrT-o) gives me goosebumps to this day... and so, along with the wife (we divorced in 1985), I also miss my dad.

Few artists can reach us this way; a couple other songs that pluck those same heartstrings are the Beatles' "For No One" and the Beach Boys' "Caroline, No". So a longer listen with these musicians/storytellers/artists at work can be as much food for the heart as for the ear. This set does just that.

Thanks again, Butter - and keep right on doing what you've been doing, good sir.

    1. Thank you for sharing your story. I have used the said River track several times in my comps. It is an amazing intro that makes me cry everytime. I sometimes feel its like a punishment to listen to it often, but boy it makes you think about what we say to each other, especially family.
      Thank you Aging Child.

  3. I can't believe your generosity in sharing these. I've been wanting them since the late 90s. Thank you so much. I have a question for you - when the tribute album One Step Up Two Steps Back came out, there was a sampler EP limited edition that had a few extra tracks that didn't make the released set, including Back in Your Arms (I don't remember who did the cover tho). I lent it to a friend, and it disappeared. I've been trying to locate a copy or mp3s of it ever since.
Any ideas where I might find it? I haven't even found any mention of it.

    1. Hi Unknown,
I do not recall having the EP you mention. I will have a look though. I am travelling at present so it may take a few days. I will also establish new links for The Lost Masters.

      Cheers.
