Serge Gainsbourg - Serge Gainsbourg & The Revolutionairies [2015] (3 x CD's)

SERGE GAINSBOURG GOES REGGAE...

Serge Gainsbourg - Serge Gainsbourg & The Revolutionairies [2015] (3 x CD's)

A fabulous 3CD set, presented in a 10" x 10" hardcover book. Collects the studio albums "Aux armes et caetera" [1979] and "Mauvaises nouvelles des etoiles" [1981] plus live release "Enregistrement public au Theatre Le Palace" [1980] and rare material, all from his "reggae" period.  Includes 8 previously unreleased tracks.

The reggae albums of the most rasta of French singers reissued, enriched with unpublished and dub versions.

At the end of the 1970s, Gainsbourg needed to revive a career in low water and landed in Jamaica with a blank check for the finest of Kingston studio musicians. From Clash to Police, reggae is in vogue, but it seems cut for the percussive poetry, the hot rhymes and the nonchalant diction of French. Nothing was composed in advance. Everything is played in a night of stressful writing and a few days of recording during which the personality of Gainsbourg maraboute the local musicians, Sly and Robbie in the lead, who hold Aux armes et cætera for "the best reggae album of a non Jamaican ". Convinced that reggae is the revolutionary music of the time, Gainsbourg adapts the Marseillaise with the success (and the troubles) that one knows, and aligns some timeless pearls (Lola Rastaquouère, Daisy Temple ...). Since then, the cult for this album has been maintained by the French journalist / musician Bruno Blum, who has extended the songs of Aux armes (and his twin Mauvaises Nouvelles des étoiles) with dub versions in Jamaican fashion . "Doc Reggae" has also retouched the bands and collected rare shots for an abundant libretto. - Laurent Rigoulet (www.telerama)
