VA - The Ultimate History of Rock 'n' Roll [1997] (10 x CD's)

ULTIMATE HISTORY OF ROCK 'n' ROLL

VA - The Ultimate History of Rock 'n' Roll [1997] (10 x CD's)

The surprising thing about K-Tel's staggering ten-disc box set burdened with the title Ultimate History of Rock & Roll is that it actually approaches delivering on its huge promise. Of course, a collection of this sort -- of any size -- is immediately sunk by lacking the presence of Elvis Presley or virtually any British act (only the Troggs and Tornadoes leap to mind). The focus here is on early rock & roll and rockabilly (Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chubby Checker, Duane Eddy), the girl groups (the Angels, the Shirelles, the Shangri-Las, Lesley Gore, the Dixie Cups, the Chiffons) and an almost overwhelming concentration on the R&B side of rock (the Coasters, the Drifters, the Platters, the Del-Vikings, Ben E. King, the Clovers, the Duprees, the Olympics, the Penguins). Also well-represented is the increasingly white-bread '60s pop/rock artists: the Beach Boys, the Turtles, the Ventures, and the Association. For fans of the above types of music, Ultimate History of Rock & Roll is an immensely rewarding set which delivers with all the best tracks from the biggest artists. Just don't expect to find "Heartbreak Hotel" or "Can't Buy Me Love." (AllMusic Review by John Bush)

  2. Hi Aging Child,
    Totaly agree.
I am not sure if I posted this earlier but it is a great listen. Hope you enjoy it.

  3. Wow.. It's the "Ultimate" History! Just so we're clear, it's not your average run-of-the-mill history, it's the "Ultimate" History. Cool! I suppose I'm easily entertained when I find amusing the vernacular they come up with to distinguish these historical sets. I'll give it a "Classic" listen after I've finished my "Super" supper of chicken "Nuggets". Then, I'll be ready for some "Essential" sleep! BB.. you likely have enough material to create an Impossibly Ultimate Best Of Everyone's All-Time Greatest Hits Collection of your own!! Thank you, and pardon my levity.

I know, the world is a funny place. Titles like this one are exploitative (ie Miss UNIVERSE pageants). I suppose that gets the buy in by the masses. But it is still a good collection.

      Cheers

  5. 155 songs, only 23 originals. All the rest are re-recordings by the 1997 current line up of the group or artist. An interesting listen, but not the ultimate collection.

    1. Hi lemonflag,
I agree with your findings but still a good and interesting listen. The word ultimate can be a tricky one because it can mean final or best example of. I think in this case it is, final. Anyhow its also a selling tool to call it Ultimate. When I see Greatest Hits on an album I know there are so many other hits and sounds that I would prefer. Like you I was a little disappointment but somehow still enjoyed the set.

      Cheers

  6. Nice post with good intentions...however, 90% of these songs are remakes..not the original recordings...oh yes, in most cases the original artists but, they rerecorded the songs so they could get royalties denied to them from initial recordings..i can't blame them but, for the discriminating ear, these songs fall short of satisfying...most of you wont know the difference since you probably never heard the real thing

    1. Hi Michael,
Thanks for popping in and commenting.
I probably should have made that fact more available in the presenting comments. As commenter lemomflag mentioned earlier "155 songs, only 23 originals. All the rest are re-recordings"
But it is still and interesting listen.

      Cheers
