FAIRPORT CONVENTION
Fairport Convention - The Essential, Who Knows Where The Time Goes [2017] (3 x CD's)
Fairport were the best and most infectious band to come out of UK in late 60's. They blended the English folk tradition of Childe Ballads such as Tam Lin and Marty Groves with obscure Dylan such as Si Tu Dois Partir and Percy's song with there own compositions such as Crazy Man Michael and the luminescent Who Knows Where The Time Goes written and performed by Sandy Denny.
This triple CD set includes 3 tracks from the Live at the L.A Troubadour album, 3 more from the Fairport Live (Sydney opera 1974) album plus a several selections from the later "A Gottle o' Geer" , "Tippler's Tales" and "A Bonny Bunch Of Roses" albums, none of which are in the classic box sets (and none of which are typically included in compilations). Throw in take 1 of "Quiet Joys Of Brotherhood" and "Ballad Of Easy Rider" both from the Deluxe version of Liege and Lief (ie not on the original album) and "If I Had A Ribbon Bow" which was recorded by the first line up but failed to make an appearance on the first album so this set is a very worthwhile accompanyment to the original classic albums. Its nicely packaged but has no liner notes and only minimal recording info. The tracks appear chronologically so its a great way to see the band's development and how personnel changes shaped their sound. The sound quality is excellent over each of the 3 CD's. It goes without saying the music is superb. Full marks again to Universal's Spectrum label. (Amazon)

I discovered Fairport one night marked by 151 proof rum and a lump of hash the size of a golf ball. In spite of it all, the music stuck and I am very happy to find this here!
