OH CANADA
VA - Music From the 49th Parallel CD1+CD2+CD3+CD4 (A Butterboy Compilation)
Canada's musical contribution has been massive. For a country with a relatively small population for its land mass (a bit like Australia), they sure has provided us a huge number of amazing musicians. Though the Canadian rock scene doesn't get as much praise as that in the U.S. and UK artists, Canadian rock artists are some of the most popular in the world. There are 1960's icons and Canadian legends like Young, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen and the indie scene is massive and continues to excite with bands like Arcade Fire and many others. What separates Canadian rock from others is how it has shaped various sub-genres of rock that includes progressive rock, pop, country, punk, heavy metal and indie rock. There are so many great bands and artists that a second 4 CD volume could be filled.
Here are 101 tracks that should invigorate your interest in looking for more Canadian artists. Hopefully here are some new artists for to explore.

Thank you for this fine set, Butter! Yes, there are some new voices here - but even more so, looking over the list of artists, I kept reacting with: "Wait; [name]'s from Canada?" So here's a nice lesson against provincialism; thanks again!
ReplyDeleteHi Aging Child.
DeleteSome people may be surprised that all these artists are Canadian, (Omitting any artists I may have slipped up on). There is a real wealth of musicianship here. Hope you enjoy this compilation. I love the Canuck's ay... I should have called this comp "Canuck Rock, Ay."
Cheers.
Totally unrelated.
DeleteHere is a link to music video in the crate - https://pixeldrain.com/u/xMUcddyG
its a great 2 part music series.
Cheers.
Thank you, Butter - and glad to see the Great White North was imported to TZ as well, and of course been well received there as well.
DeleteThanks for the ticket to LC... will check it out, too, eh. Enjoy your weekend!
Hi Aging Child,
DeleteWhist I cant find the time I want to participate at TZ, I do want to continue to make the effort to place my comps there as well as read the commenst and see what others are uploading. Its a very interesting place (except when the grandstanding begins).
May you weekend be filled with mystery, wonderment and reckless abandon.
Cheers.
What a kind benediction - that would make a fine toast; thank you, good sir, and likewise to you and yours!
DeleteOh, no - "Butter's Toasts"... pun not intended, although it certainly is a fine weekend for loafing. ;-)
To put something like this together you have to have a passionate knowledge of music...and a great library. BB has both, bravo, and thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks D.
DeleteEnjoy the compilation and check out the crates.
Cheers.
What no Hank Snow or Lorne Green? Tut, tut. 😂😂😂😂
ReplyDeleteHi Bernie B.
DeleteI have failed again. What should I do. I know let create another volume. All suggestions welcome. I know Hank Snow, Lorne Green but I don't know Tut Tut.😂
Cheers.
Ok, no kidding, I need a Best Of Lorne Greene......anybody?
ReplyDelete"The story spread throughout the land
That I had beaten Ringo's hand
And it was just the years, they say
That made me put my guns away
But on his grave they can't explain
The tarnished star above the name of Ringo"
I'm serious...anybody?
Missing the best Jack Scott, Diamonds, Beau-Marks, Terry Kelch, Les Voght & The Prowlers, Chessmen, and so many many more
ReplyDeleteThat's OK, ok, I will included them in volume 5 when I get around to it.
DeleteCheers.
Thanks for a great collection. A possible second 4CD set would still omit hundreds of worthy artists some of whose recordings go back to the late 19th century, although the recordings were actually made in NYC. For D, lots of Lorne Green can be found at https://wetransfer.com/downloads/689ddae4bf040d81e0eecabc05151f7e20200612165624/887471a23e9a25bf1781703732bced5220200612165624/819916
ReplyDeleteThe link is good for seven days (June 19).
Best wishes. Stay safe.
@Fred ....wow, just downloaded, thanks so much, and 3 albums!!
Deletewhat can I say, I love the obscure and often neglected ones
grew up on Bonanza as a kid, every Sunday night, those were the days that family's actually watched TV together lol
thanks again
Hi Fred, Thanks for your great comment and helpful suggestions. I am sure D is over the moon too.
DeleteI am always happy to receive suggestions from the reader as it can open my ears to more new sounds. Thanks
Cheers.
Great, a silly offhand joke has made someone happy.
DeleteHi Butterboy,
ReplyDeleteIn this compilation there are many well-known artists that I did not know were Canadian. A good opportunity to learn more about the music from Canada.
Thanks for the efford!
Cheers
Hi Il Commendatore,
DeleteThis makes me happy, keep up the journey of finding new artist my friend.
Cheers.
As a canuck, I smile somewhat proudly at this collection eh. Enjoy the surprise of some at realizing that some of these bands are from the frozen north eh.
ReplyDeleteAnd Butterboy, I am hesitant at correcting you in public on your own blog, but the correct expression is "eh", eh. "Ay" must be a bastardized translation I guess . . . laffs.
Love the blog and your efforts, a thankful and hearty thumbs up for the frozen north eh!
Coo CooCooCoo Coo CooCooCoo - (ala Bob and Doug Mackenzie eh)
Hi HarryHarmonica51,
DeleteI guess Ay is a phonetic sound for Eh, sometimes the fingers type what it should sound like (my typing can be hit and miss at times, eh!)
Glad you are enjoying the blog and thanks for putting me on the correct path of good Canuck grammer.
Cheers.
Missing the Douce. Jerry Doucette (Mama Let Him Play).
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog!
Hi manufan99,
DeleteThanks for your comment and suggestion.
A New volume required to capture all the missing stars.
Cheers.
Thanks Butter! As Wayne Campbell (Canadian Mike Myers) would say, "we are not worthy!"
ReplyDeleteThe Arrogant Worms do lots of Canadian content such as "The Mountie Song" "Canada's Really Big" and so forth. Five Iron Frenzy (not Canadian) do a cool song about Canada:

Hi Berni.
DeleteHope you enjoy the tracks selected for this compilation. Lots of great memories here.
Thanks for the Links and suggestions.
Cheers.
Thank you for another great comp!
ReplyDeleteThanks Davetuba.
DeleteI have had people say that I've missed a few artist, That would be a fact, its not that I don't like them, its simply because they were my choices at the time. Next time around I may add more as extension volume. I could probably do that with all my comps.
I hope you enjoy this one and any others you pick up here.
Cheers.
Great comp, Butterbuy! When you have time, you should check out some of the mid-90's indie music - especially the bands that exploded out of Halifax, N.S. like Sloan, The Inbreds, Eric's Trip, Thrush Hermit etc. Lots of great stuff from that time period.
ReplyDeleteOne tiny gripe. You used the "wrong" version of "One Ring Jane" by Mother Tucker's Yellow Duck. The original single version that came out in 1968 is the better version, in my opinion, but that could be because that was the version I heard first! The version you used was re-recorded in 1969, and is longer. Anyway...if you want to check it out, here is a YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx6cILDF_Ag
I remember being so excited when I found a compilation CD with the song on it and it was the different version! Gah!
Well, thanks for taking on the thankless task of making compilations so jerks like me can write to you with niggling complaints! :) I really did enjoy it!
David
Hi David Dedrick,
DeleteI have a few 90's Canadian Indie bands. Its on my list. Thanks.
Try this version.

ReplyDeleteHi djmantis.
DeleteNew links established, tested and working.
Cheers.
