VA - 100 Greatest Australian Singles Of The '60s [2015] (4 x CD's)

GREAT AUSSIE SINGLES

VA - 100 Greatest Australian Singles Of The '60s [2015] (4 x CD's)

In the 1960s, Australian rock'n'roll singles were as good as those made anywhere in the world. Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs' "Poison Ivy" even knocked The Beatles off the top of the charts when the Fab Four were touring here in 1964! John Lennon was so amazed he asked to meet Thorpe in person. '100 Greatest Australian Singles Of The '60s' is a 4CD set released to coincide with a new book of the same name. The book, written by influential '70s Australian rock writers David 'Doctor Pepper' Pepperell and Colin Talbot, dedicates a chapter each to the authors' choice of the best local singles of the decade, and this CD Box replicates that list across 4 discs.

Both the book and the 4CD set present a diverse selection of tracks; one with an eye to what was popular as well as what was simply great. Unlike many other compilations that might focus on a particular genre of the era, '100 Greatest Australian Singles Of The '60s' ranges from the pristine pop-folk of The Seekers to the crunching psychedelic rock of The Wild Cherries and spans the whole decade. The compilers have tried to showcase the best, yet we expect there will always be some songs that the listener or reader will regard as glaring omissions. Well, that's the way the turntable spins! And that's the fun of these lists and collections too!  So, take a trip back to these classic records of the sixties, to listen once again and remember those heady times when long hair and short skirts changed the world. As a bonus, here is a link to a website called TOP 100 SINGLES by . Grant Dawe. It lists every song that has ever entered the Top 100 Singles Chart in Australia since 1950. Over 77% of those songs have streaming audio which can be played as individual tracks or through one of the site's many jukeboxes or playlists. Being able to hear the songs can be helpful for people who don't always know the name of songs that they like or have heard. The site was created to help people reconnect with the songs that they've liked from the past and to discover many more!       https://www.top100singles.net/

    1. Hi Little Bill.

The Australian music scene was very fertile during the 60's (and after).
I hope these tracks will allow you to hear the subtle differences between US and UK music at the time. Enjoy.

      Cheers

  5. Once again, I am alwaysamazed how much good music was made in Australia back then. I know, here in the US, we heard some but so much was never played here. Damn shame as these guys had a lot to offer. Glad to be able to hear it now, in any case. Thanks!
