NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL

Neutral Milk Hotel - Box Set [2011] (7 x CD's)

Neutral Milk Hotel was an American indie rock band formed in Ruston, Louisiana by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Jeff Mangum in the late 1980s. A part of the Elephant 6 Recording Company, the band was one of its three first projects, alongside The Apples in Stereo and The Olivia Tremor Control. The band is noted for its experimental sound, abstract lyrics, and eclectic instrumentation. The first release under the Neutral Milk Hotel moniker was the 1994 EP Everything Is, a short collection of tracks featuring Mangum. On the band's full-length debut album On Avery Island, which followed shortly thereafter, Mangum was joined by childhood friend and Apples in Stereo frontman Robert Schneider, who contributed production and instrumentation. Upon the album's release, the full band was formed and extensive touring began.  Neutral Milk Hotel released In the Aeroplane Over the Sea in 1998, which became their best-known and most critically acclaimed album. Although the album did not meet commercial success at the time of release, it has gone on to sell over 300,000 copies and received critical acclaim from several publications.

Jeff Mangum, the reclusive songwriter behind Neutral Milk Hotel,  has self-released a vinyl-only box set compiling the band’s entire body of work, including 15 previously unreleased tracks. The set includes the band’s two albums, On Avery Island and the critically acclaimed In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, along with the Everything Is EP, an EP of unreleased songs titled Ferris Wheel on Fire, three 7-inch singles and two posters.  (Amazon)

A really a great collection. The raw emotion on every single one of these tracks is palpable. Its great to have all the Neutral Milk Hotel tracks in one place.
Highlights are... Everything.

  3. "Where is your favorite place to smush your boo?" "At the Neutral Milk Hotel."

I sat on the sidelines with NMH for a long time, but finally got on board at the urging of the missus. I felt like a real ding dong having slept on Mangum and co. for so long.
