K's B-SIDE SPECIAL
VA - I Do Like to be B-side the A-side: 260 Classic Non-Album B-sides (Super Deluxe Edition) [2023] (12xCDs)
There have been so many amazing single B-sides released over the years of which many have become more famous and more loved than the original A-sides. I felt it was about time to compile a truly comprehensive collection of what are widely considered to be the best non-album B-sides of all time, spanning from the late 1940s to today.
Many bands are renowned for releasing brilliant B-sides; The Jam, The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys, Oasis, Slade, The Sweet, T. Rex, Arctic Monkeys, Suede, Buzzcocks, The Cure, The Kinks and The Beatles.
The A-side and B-side are the two sides of a phonograph record; these terms have often been printed on the labels of two-sided music recordings. The A-side usually features a recording that its artist, producer, or record company intends to be the initial focus of promotional efforts and radio airplay and hopefully become a hit record. The B-side (or "flip-side") is a secondary recording that typically receives less attention, although some B-sides have been as successful as, or more so than, their A-sides.
Use of this language has largely declined in the 21st century as the music industry has transitioned away from analog recordings towards digital formats without physical sides, such as CDs, downloads and streaming. Nevertheless, some artists and labels continue to employ the terms A-side and B-side metaphorically to describe the type of content a particular release features, with B-side sometimes representing a "bonus" track or other material.

So, after weeks of truly exhaustive and extensive online research, plus my own favourites and memories, here is my personal compilation of what I consider to be the 260 best non-album B-sides. I say non-album meaning that all the tracks included in this compilation were only available on the vinyl single or CD single format and not included on their counterpart albums at the time.
My objective was to keep this collection to strictly NON-ALBUM B-sides, so only featuring songs which were never initially included on albums at the time they were released.
A few tracks were initially recorded and released as B-sides, but on a few occasions were later re-recorded for an album, so I'm including these as they were different recordings, and often much better than the re-recorded album versions!
I searched through every list, blog and discussion forum post on this subject known to man to arrive at these 260 selections which are mostly the general consensus of the greatest B-sides ever released, and are all non-album tracks only to be included on later vinyl compilations or expanded CDs and super deluxe edition box sets.
My cover art was inspired by the original song by Mark Sheridan and sheet music design. "I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside" is a popular British music hall song. It was written in 1907 by John H. Glover-Kind and made famous by music hall singer Mark Sheridan who first recorded it in 1909. It speaks of the singer's love for the seaside, and his wish to return there for his summer holidays each year. It was composed at a time when the yearly visits of the British working-class to the seaside were booming.

This fully packed 12CD set contains many rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with a number featured in their original mono 7" single form. Only the original studio mixes are included. No later remixes, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here!
Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

ReplyDeleteHi TC,
DeleteGlad to hear it in appreciated.

'A Bomb In Wardour Street' was not a B-Side. The single was a double A-Side with both sides of the original UK release imprinted "A". : https://auctions.c.yimg.jp/images.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/image/dr000/auc0302/users/0f5777aee4b14fbf78ea278445a387fb320d55e4/i-img640x480-1645148674y2sqxl508176.jpg
ReplyDeleteHi Manny.
DeleteI am not sure why you have focused on that track alone unless it's to prove me wrong. Your statement that it was not a B-Side in incorrect. As you can see from the links below It was officially a B-side in Ireland, Germany, Japan and Australia, plus this recording was only available if you bought the single. The later album version was a little longer as well as being a different take.
I must make it clear that this B-sides collection is not strictly limited to just the UK. B-side on this release too.

“A” Bomb was officially released as a B-side in Ireland, Germany, Japan and Australia, so I think it fits the bill. There were many B-sides that were released outside the UK that are included in this collection.

Another incredible mammoth work by K!!! Great theme! Thank You!!!
ReplyDeleteSometimes a B-Side is a throw-away...but often it's a very interesting track that didn't fit the current album or general style of the band.
Then of course if you're Prince....your B-Sides alone would make for a very solid career for any normal artist.
Glad you like it, OldDJ.
DeleteCheers.
Thank you, Butterboy, for this interesting compilation. I found some real gems, especially the three tracks by Talk Talk I oddly did not know of.
ReplyDeleteHi Wolkgang,
DeleteI will pass this onto K. Its a great set of new finds for many. Enjoy!
Cheers.
