Charles Mingus - The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65 [2012] (7 x CDs)

“Charles Mingus - The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65” showcases the brilliance of Charles Mingus, a true jazz legend. Released by Mosaic Records in 2012, this limited edition set of 7,500 is a time capsule that takes us back to some of Mingus’ most vibrant live performances from 1964 to 1965.

Mingus had this knack for mixing all sorts of musical styles - gospel, blues, classical, even avant-garde. And you can hear all of that in this collection. The music swings from gentle and thoughtful to fiery and intense, mirroring the deep emotions and complexity in Mingus’ compositions.

The band on this box set is a who’s who of jazz greats. Eric Dolphy, Jaki Byard, Johnny Coles, Clifford Jordan, and Dannie Richmond, to name a few, all brought their unique talents to the table. Their collective improvisation is a key feature of the Jazz Workshop, and their performances are a testament to their ability to bring Mingus’ musical vision to life.

Mingus, as a bandleader, was quite the character. He was known for pushing his musicians to their limits to get the sound he wanted. You can feel this intensity in the performances, adding a raw energy and emotion to the music. This box set also gives us a peek into how Mingus’ music evolved during this period. Each concert is like a chapter in a book, showing us a different side of his evolving musical ideas. It’s like having a front-row seat to witness the growth of Mingus’ artistry over time.

In a nutshell, “Charles Mingus - The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65” is a journey into the heart of Mingus’ musical world, offering a rare insight into the creative process of one of jazz’s most innovative and enduring figures. The music in this box set beautifully showcases Mingus’ brilliance, encapsulating the very soul of his artistic prowess in its most authentic expression. It’s a must-have for any jazz lover and a fitting tribute to a true master of the genre. Enjoy the journey!

  5. One of the greatest Mosaic box sets!! Quite a few live recordings of Mingus's group in 1964-65 - esp. 1964 - had been released before this set came out, but the music on this collection is special, somehow - more intense, more expansive versions of Mingus's repertoire in those years.

  6. So appreciate this music. I have MIngus's Complete Candid Recordings LP's and the CBS Recordings LP's both Mosaics and studio efforts. This completes the brilliant Mosaic sets of Mingus recordings with live performances. Thanks so much!
