RARE SKA

VA - Treasure Isle Ska Rarities [2019] (3 x CDs)

Ska, with its unique off-beat rhythm, was born in Jamaica in the late 1950s. It paved the way for reggae and rocksteady, forming the bedrock of much of the music that Jamaica is known for today. This genre is a blend of American jazz and R&B with traditional Caribbean melodies, mirroring the diverse cultural influences present in Jamaica during that period.

“VA - Treasure Isle Ska Rarities” is an extraordinary collection that embodies the lively essence of Ska music. Unveiled in 2019 by Trojan Records, a UK-based record label celebrated for its commitment to reggae music, this anthology acts as a time machine, guiding listeners back to the golden age of Ska. Based on the acclaimed 2017 7" singles box set of the same name, this hugely generous 3CD set comprises the original 10 tracks from that collection bolstered by 74 impossibly rare and unreleased bonus tracks, all recorded for Duke Reid's legendary Treasure Isle catalogue between 1964 and 1966. Of the 84 romping ska tracks, 15 are previously unreleased, 54 make their CD debut and over 10 have been officially unavailable for over a decade, showcasing the timeless appeal and influence of Ska music.

The “Treasure Isle Ska Rarities” anthology is a tribute to this rich musical legacy that narrates a tale of an era and a location, of a community and its culture. The music is full of energy and positivity, reflecting the spirit of resilience and happiness that defined Jamaica in challenging times.

Trojan Records, the curator of this compilation, has a well-established reputation for preserving and promoting reggae music and its derivatives. With the launch of “VA - Treasure Isle Ska Rarities”, they have reaffirmed their dedication to honoring and propagating Jamaica’s rich musical tradition.

This is a musical expedition that transports listeners to the origins of Ska, providing a peek into the dynamic culture and history that spawned this genre. It is an essential acquisition for any Ska aficionado, serving as both a nostalgic journey and a portal for new listeners to explore and enjoy the genre. (B)

    2. One of the main drives for me is realizing how much music I missed because the DJ's didn't play it. They had there own tastes and lots of stuff fell by the wayside. Peel was a bit different but he was special.
So we keep searching and find new treasures.

    3. Hi lemonflag,
Absolutely, I couldn’t agree more! The beauty of music is its vastness and diversity. There’s always something new to discover. Hidden gems that didn’t make it to the mainstream are wonderful to find. DJ’s, certainly have their own tastes and preferences, and it’s inevitable that some music gets overlooked. But that’s what makes the journey of discovering new music so exciting and rewarding. I plan to keep on exploring and enjoying the treasures I find along the way. I know you do the same.
      Cheers.
