PSYCHEDELIC JAZZ

VA - Astral Traveling, Psychedelic Jazz Performances (A Butterboy Compilation) (6 x CDs)

Jazz music is one of my favorite listening pleasures, but I have always wondered what songs would truly or genuinely be considered Psychedelic Jazz.  What fundamentally determines this? I believe it is a sound where the sound is part improvisation, part psychedelic styling and at least some level of free-form virtuosity that excites. I soon learned that Psychedelic Jazz is not really a genre. It is a feeling or groove based in original jazz phrasing. It can be very personal at times.

The tracks chosen for this compilation encompass Jazz with Eastern music and philosophies, classical music, African, Gospel, Funk, Latin, Ballet, Soul, Blues and Rock. They all capture elements of many genres as it is placed in a jazz environment.  It has been a difficult task to pick tracks that are truly Psychedelic Jazz.  I feel I have pulled together songs by artists mainly of jazz expression that represent a psychedelic jazz atmosphere.

Of the psychedelic jazz performances featured here you will find some heavyweight jazz artists alongside many other less-well known, but equally important artists as well as some unknowns or surprising additions. These is definitely a mixed bag of jazz tunes of the Psychedelic variety here to explore. The more I listen to these tracks I feel I am being transported to another dimension of jazz, full of ethereal, electric and electronic sounds but without losing any of the acoustic elements that make these songs so important.

I hope you enjoy these 120 Psychedelic Jazz performances.

    2. I've checked out most of the tracks and the "hit rate" really fits my taste! You've also brought to my attention the existence of the April Orchestra RCA series. I would love to hear the rest of that Morricone album sometime....:)
