ELVIN JONES
Elvin Jones - The Complete Blue Note Elvin Jones Sessions [2000] ALL
Elvin Ray Jones (September 9, 1927 - May 18, 2004) was an American jazz drummer of the post-bop era. Most famously a member of John Coltrane's quartet, with whom he recorded from late 1960 to late 1965, Jones appeared on such albums as My Favorite Things, A Love Supreme, Ascension and Live at Birdland. After 1966, Jones led his own trio, and later larger groups under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. His brothers Hank and Thad were also celebrated jazz musicians with whom he occasionally recorded. Elvin was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1995. In his The History of Jazz, jazz historian and critic Ted Gioia calls Jones "one of the most influential drummers in the history of jazz". Max Roach called him "Emperor Jones". He was also ranked at Number 23 on Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time". (Wikipedia)
Elvin Jones, a luminary in the jazz world, was a trailblazer and a major force in shaping the trajectory of jazz music in the 20th century with his distinctive style and fervor. The following explores the importance of the Mosaic box set, “The Complete Blue Note Elvin Jones Sessions,” released in 2000, which encapsulates the musical odyssey of Jones. Jones’ association with Blue Note Records commenced following his stint with the John Coltrane Quartet. Although he had recorded a few sessions as a bandleader during this time, it was his collaboration with Blue Note that truly illuminated his musical prowess. The late 1960s, a period of significant transformation in American history, witnessed Jones recording his inaugural trio session for Blue Note in 1968. This period also marked a transition for the record label, with the departure of founder Alfred Lion and the advent of new recording technologies.
The Mosaic box set stands reflects Jones’ tenacity as an artist and his passion for music. It includes several albums making their debut on compact disc, providing listeners with a comprehensive overview of Jones’ work during his tenure with Blue Note. The set is a rich repository of varied material, demonstrating Jones’ ability to thrive during a period of decline for Blue Note.
The box set is more than just a compilation of music; it narrates the story of Jones’ artistic evolution. His initial two sessions for Blue Note in 1968 were bold and groundbreaking. The lack of a chording instrument and the emphasis on intense swinging marked a deviation from the standard. This was raw and unadulterated music, with no efforts made to produce a radio-friendly hit. The objective was clear - to create music that was genuine, authentic, and deeply expressive.
As time passed, Jones’ music underwent a continual evolution. The inclusion of horns and percussion in the ensemble introduced a new facet to his sound. However, the tradition of not having a chording instrument persisted, preserving the raw and unfiltered quality of his music.
“The Complete Blue Note Elvin Jones Sessions” is a significant collection that provides an immersive exploration into the musical universe of Elvin Jones. Elvin’s illustrious career is marked by an expansive network of eminent musicians that his band encompassed, and the vast scope of their creative concepts. This collection stands unrivaled as the optimal platform to appreciate the elements that established him as a pivotal figure in the music industry. Furthermore, no other compilation provides such a lucid chronicle of his instrumental role in the progression of music. It highlights his creativity, resilience, and love for music charting his evolution as one of the most influential artists in the realm of jazz. (B)
