VA - The Roots of Punk Rock Music 1926-1962 [2013] (3 x CDs)

If you want to understand the origins and influences of punk rock music, which emerged in the mid-1970s as a rebellious and energetic form of rock music, you should listen to this album. This album is a compilation of songs that influenced the punk rock genre, released in 2013 by Frémeaux & Associés, a French label specialized in historical and cultural recordings. The album contains 69 tracks from various artists, spanning from 1926 to 1962, and covering a wide range of musical styles, such as jazz, rock & roll, soul, funk, rockabilly and rhythm & blues. You will hear some of the most influential and innovative musicians of the 20th century, such as Jelly Roll Morton, Charlie Parker, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Eddie Cochran, The Crickets and Screaming Lord Sutch.

The compilation was produced by Bruno Blum, a musician, journalist, writer, illustrator, and musicologist who has a deep knowledge and passion for reggae, rock, and Caribbean music. He was also part of the punk movement in London in the late 1970s, where he witnessed the rise of bands like Iggy Pop, The Clash or The Ramones. He selected the titles for this album based on his extensive historical research and his personal experience. He wrote the educational booklet and the discography that accompany the album, providing detailed information and context for each track. He also translated his texts and those of other authors into English for the international audience. He wrote the liner notes for the album, explaining how the songs on this album reflect the original forms of subversion in rock music. He traces the roots of punk rock from the early jazz musicians who broke the rules of harmony and rhythm to create new sounds and expressions, to the rock & roll pioneers who challenged the social norms and conventions with their rebellious attitude and style. He shows how the artists on this album expressed their hedonism, irreverence and arrogance through their music, lyrics and performance. He argues that these elements later influenced the punk rock bands who adopted a similar approach to music and society.(B)
