Miles Davis & John Coltrane - The Complete Columbia Recordings 1955-1961 [2000] (6 x CDs)

If you are a fan of jazz music, you will know the names of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. They are two of the most influential and celebrated jazz musicians of all time, who revolutionized the genre with their innovative and expressive styles. But did you know that they also recorded some of the finest jazz albums together for Columbia Records from 1955 to 1961? This box set is a comprehensive and fascinating collection of their collaboration, which includes six CDs with 58 tracks, 18 of which are previously unreleased alternate takes, false starts, studio chatter, and rare live recordings.

The box set covers the period from October 26, 1955, when Davis and Coltrane first recorded together for Columbia, to March 21, 1961, when they played their last session together before Coltrane left Davis’s group to pursue his own career. During this time, they recorded some of their most acclaimed albums, such as 'Round About Midnight (1957), Milestones (1958), Kind of Blue (1959), and Someday My Prince Will Come (1961). These albums showcase the evolution of both Davis and Coltrane as musicians and composers, as well as the chemistry and tension between them.

Davis was the leader and mentor of the group, who had a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve with his music. He was always looking for new ways to express himself and to explore different musical possibilities. He was also a master of using silence and space as musical elements, creating a sense of mystery and intimacy in his playing. Coltrane was the eager and restless student, who was constantly searching for his own voice and style. He was influenced by Davis’s modal approach, but also experimented with more complex harmonies and rhythms, developing a more aggressive and passionate sound. Together, they created some of the most memorable and influential jazz music of all time, such as “So What”, “All Blues”, “Flamenco Sketches”, “Milestones”, “Straight, No Chaser”, and “My Favorite Things”.

The sound quality is superb, thanks to the remastering by Mark Wilder and Phil Schaap, who restored and enhanced the original recordings. The packaging is elegant and sturdy, with a metal slipcase and a hardcover book-like case. This box set is a must-have for any jazz lover who wants to witness the creative process and artistic growth of two legends. It is a testament to the power and beauty of jazz as an art form that transcends time and boundaries. It is also a tribute to the legacy of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, who left an indelible mark on the history of music. (B)

    2. OK, I figured out what was going on. I've been using a third-party unzipper that refused to unzip some files, but didn't give me a warning message about that. Problem fixed! Sorry to bother you, and thanks again for what you do!
