Laura Nyro was a celebrated tunesmith of her day, penning soulful, literate songs that took the folky introspection of her peers and infused it with elements of soul, R&B, jazz, and gospel. Her confident piano work and rich, expressive vocals

Laura Nyro was born as Laura Nigro on October 18, 1947 in the Bronx, New York and attended the High School of Music and Art in New York . Nyro was the daughter of Gilda Mirsky Nigro, a bookkeeper with the American Psychoanalytic Association, and Louis Nigro, a piano tuner and jazz trumpeter. Nyro showed an early interest in music and started composing songs at the age of 8. As a teenager, she often sang doo-wop in New York subway stations . At age 17, she wrote the song “And When I Die,” which she sold to the famous folk group Peter, Paul and Mary for $5,000 . In 1966, she won a record contract of her own after auditioning before record company executive Artie Mogull . She released her 1967 debut album, More Than a New Discovery, under the name Laura Nyro . That same year, she performed at the famous Monterey Pop Festival . After her performance at Monterey, record producer David Geffen signed Nyro to a $4 million contract with Columbia Records. This gave her more creative control over her next albums, including the two widely regarded as her best, 1968’s Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and 1969’s New York Tendaberry . The Columbia contract also allowed for Nyro’s songs to be covered by other, more established artists. Her songs were better known in versions recorded by other artists; The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", and "Save the Country"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul and Mary with "And When I Die"; Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson with "Eli's Comin'"; and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)". Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King's and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof". All scored hit singles with her material. Nyro’s frustrations with her lack of success as a performer led to her periodically retiring from recording and performing. 

In 1971, Laura Nyro announced her retirement from the music business at the age of 24. She returned to playing and recording music in 1976 with the album Smile. She continued to release sporadic albums over the next 20 years, writing and performing the music she wanted to write, often with strong feminist and pantheist lyrical themes, and playing occasional concerts in small venues. Latter-day efforts revealed she was still a compelling singer and pianist.

Laura Nyro was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1995 and passed away on April 8, 1997 at the age of 49. Her songs continue to inspire a generation of artists and are still frequently covered and performed live. Nyro carved out a niche for young female singer/songwriters to perform behind a piano, heralding the popularity of artists like Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco and Fiona Apple. Her son Gil Bianchini, a hip-hop artist who performs as Gil-T, samples her songs in his raps. She was praised for her strong emotive vocal style and 3-octave mezzo-soprano vocal range. 

Nyro was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 (Wikipedia)
