That'll Be the Day: 50 Smash Hits Based on the Film - Original Film Soundtrack (Special 2023 50th Anniversary Remastered Expanded Edition) (2CD) (1973)

NEWLY UPDATED and EXPANDED!

One of the greatest soundtrack albums of all time - number 1 in the UK exactly 50 years ago from 30 June 1973 - 18 August 1973 - never released on CD!

It spent seven weeks at the #1 position on the Official Albums Chart Top 50.

That'll Be the Day is a 1973 British coming of age drama film directed by Claude Whatham, written by Ray Connolly, and starring David Essex, Rosemary Leach and Ringo Starr. Set primarily in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it tells the story of Jim MacLaine (Essex), a British teenager raised by his single mother (Leach). Jim rejects society's conventions and pursues a hedonistic and sexually loose lifestyle, harming others and damaging his close relationships. The cast also featured several prominent musicians who lived through the era portrayed, including Starr, Billy Fury, Keith Moon and John Hawken. The film's success led to a sequel, Stardust, that followed the life of Jim MacLaine through the 1960s and 1970s.

The film was a hit at the box office (by 1985 it had earned an estimated profit of £406,000). Nat Cohen, who invested in the film, said it made more than 50% profit on top of its cost. It was one of the most popular movies of 1973 at the British box office.

Screenwriter Ray Connolly said "At the time, I was astonished by its success. A sixth form drop out, who throws his school books into a river when he should be sitting his A-level history, writes poetry in the rain while hiring out deck chairs, and lets down just about absolutely everyone was hardly an obvious subject. But, on reflection, I can now see that there was nothing else like it at the time. And the music soundtrack was fantastic.

David Puttnam and his producing partner Sandy Lieberson met with Nat Cohen of EMI Films who agreed to provide half the budget. The other half, £100,000, was obtained from Ronco Records on the condition that the film include 40 songs from Ronco's catalog of old hits, which they could then sell on TV as a soundtrack album.

I have the original vinyl album, and I matched the songs track by track to be 100% identical to the original 1973 release. I've now added 10 songs as bonus tracks which were originally featured in the film, but not on the UK soundtrack album (although some were included on the Australian edition). Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment for this now 50 track, 50th anniversary 2CD set.

Despite its enormous popularity this album has never had an official CD release in the UK.

VA - Stardust: 53 Original Hits from the Sound Track of the Film (Special 2024 50th Anniversary Remastered Expanded Edition) [1974] (2 x CDs)

NEWLY UPDATED and EXPANDED!

Stardust is a 1974 British musical drama film directed by Michael Apted and starring David Essex, Adam Faith, and Larry Hagman. It is the sequel to the 1973 film That'll Be the Day, which introduced the characters of Jim MacLaine and his street-smart friend Mike Menary. It chronicles Jim's rise and fall as an international rock star during the 1960s and early 1970s, with Mike as his personal manager. It features a number of pop/rock performers, including Essex, Faith, Keith Moon, Marty Wilde, Dave Edmunds, Paul Nicholas and Edd Byrnes.

The Stardust soundtrack album was released in October 1974 on Ronco Records to coincide with the opening. Some of the later songs in the film were performed by the artists in the film's fictional Stray Cats themselves.

The follow-up sequel to That'll Be the Day, once again, this soundtrack has never been released on CD only vinyl, cassette and 8-Track in 1974:

Compiled using the latest HQ CD digital remasters, all original versions, this new edition has now been expanded to include 9 bonus tracks taken from the US version of the album not featured on the original UK release:

Hope you enjoy these newly updated and remastered albums.

As a very special bonus I have included Blu-ray rips of each film in mp4/mkv formats.

  1. Oh my giddy aunt, K you've done it again! I remember picking up the Stardust soundtrack LP at a second hand record store in the 80s for a fiver, it has to be one of the best 60s compilations of all time... but here you're just spoiling us! This is manna from heaven... and the films too! We don't deserve you. Merci, danke and grazie!

  4. This is a contender for greatest soundtrack, but my heart will always go out to That Summer! as a young man stuck in Central Nebraska, it introduced me to bands I would never have heard, bands that I continue to listen to today. The other was Dance Craze - which was a documentary, but it's still a soundtrack. Made me a ska fan forever.
