This is a garage compilation series. The compiler is amazed at how much great uncompiled material still remains out there, as witnessed by this CD set. Although a few tracks were previously compiled, they were on long out-of-print collections that are no longer available. A large number of these tracks were lifted directly from vinyl, resulting in major shifts in volume from one track to the next. One song might be a clean CD version featuring clear, crisp and loud fidelity, while the next suddenly sounds like your speakers are buried under a pile of dirty laundry (maybe they are anyway). Many garage singles were recorded under questionable circumstances, and the entire process from recording to finished disc was probably done on the tightest possible budget. There are entirely too many such tracks here.

Most of the material is good to very good, with a couple of dramatic standouts and a few fillers as well. It’s mostly straight garage with some garage/psych and an occasional punker. The songs presented here, while not in perfect hi-fi sound, are obviously far from being the dregs scraped from the bottom of the barrel - these are all up there with the very best. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information about many of these bands. In most cases, there simply isn’t much to tell: four high school buddies form a band after seeing the Beatles on Sullivan; they gig locally and put out a killer record; in 1968 they break up when one of the members gets drafted, another guy gets married, the third goes to college and the last guy blows his mind on acid then finds religion…the end.
