VA - Sucker Punch, Jamaican Boxing Tributes [2004]

JAMAICA

VA - Sucker Punch, Jamaican Boxing Tributes [2004]

This album is a collection of reggae songs that honor various boxers, mostly from the '70s. The songs are by famous Jamaican artists, such as Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, Derrick Morgan, and Prince Far I. The album shows how boxing influenced Jamaican culture and music, and how many Jamaicans admired and respected the black boxers who fought for glory and dignity. The album has 17 songs, each dedicated to a different boxer or fight. Some of the songs are:

  • “George Foreman” by Bacca and Harry J All-Stars, which praises the heavyweight champion for his knockout power and his comeback after losing to Muhammad Ali.
  • “Big Fight” and “Foreman Versus Frazier” by Big Youth, which describe the epic fight between Foreman and Joe Frazier in 1973, which Foreman won by TKO in the second round.
  • “Superchamp” and “Black Superman” by Charlie Ace and Derrick Morgan, which pay tribute to Muhammad Ali, who was also known as Cassius Clay. They mention his skills, charisma, courage, religion, and famous fights with Liston, Foreman, Frazier, and others.
  • “Cassius Clay” and “Muhammad Ali” by Dennis Alcapone and Trinity, which are toasts over different rhythms that praise Clay’s speed, strength, style, and achievements. They also mention his fights with Liston, Patterson, Cooper, Chuvalo, Norton, Spinks, and others.
  • “Knock Out Punch” by King Tubby & The Aggrovators and The Dynamites, which are dub and instrumental versions of some of the songs on the album.
  • “Fight” by Clancy Eccles and “The Great Musical Battle” by Derrick Morgan, which use boxing as a metaphor for fighting for rights and freedom, and for comparing music to boxing.
  • “Natty Champion” by Prince Far I and “Joe Louis” by The Dynamites, which celebrate Rastafari as the champion of the world, and the legendary boxer who reigned as the heavyweight champion from 1937 to 1949.

VA - Sucker Punch,Jamaican Boxing Tributes is an enjoyable album that mixes history, culture, music, and sports in a unique way. It is a testament to the impact that boxing had on Jamaican society and creativity, as well as to the talent and diversity of Jamaican artists." (B)
