Freakbeat is a rock music genre that peaked approximately between 1966 and 1967. The term was invented in the 1980s by the music journalist Phil Smee, to retroactively describe a music style that has been described as a missing link between the early to mid-1960s mod R&B scene and the psychedelic rock and progressive rock genres that emerged in the late-1960s with bands such as Pink Floyd.

Freakbeat music was typically created by four-piece bands experimenting with studio production techniques. Elements of the freakbeat sound include strong direct drum beats, loud and frenzied guitar riffs, and extreme effects such as: fuzztone, flanging, distortion and compression or phasing on the vocal or drum tracks. Often used almost synonymously with garage rock, the term is usually applied to music originating

in the UK (unlike garage, which is most commonly used to describe American groups).  Early albums by The Who and The Kinks supplied the blueprints for freakbeat bands that followed, such as The Creation, The Sorrows and The Move.

In the Spring of 2001, Phil Smee wrote a special article on freakbeat for MOJO Collections Magazine, in which he chose his top 50 tracks within the genre. The term 'freakbeat' was coined by Smee on the Bam-Caruso compilation 'Freak Beat Fantoms'. "Freak, as in touched by the hand of mayhem, and 'beat', that British style flourishing between the mersey years and the advent of the underground" - explained Smee.

English music journalist Phil Smee (who later started the Bam-Caruso Label) coined the genre term to describe the harder, fuzz loaded and sometimes psychedelic mutations that happened to the British Invasion Mod music.

The Soul elements that drove Mods’ core sound somehow got lost on the way when in the mid-sixties, colourful clothes, marihuana and LSD became the conceptual glasses of a whole generation. Musicians that could afford it started to play around with the newest gimmick inventions brought into recording studios. Among them we find fuzztones, flanging and chorus which is often manipulated with trippy echoes and other effects. All in all, Freakbeat can be described as a relative to the US Garage-Psych movement.

As many apparent parallels as many differences flag both genres. As there is a gap between Garage-Psych and pure Psychedelic Rock, there is one with Freakbeat and other UK Psychedelia (as Popsike for example). One of the main components for Freakbeat is the rhythm that came in a modified manner from the British R&B origins. So to say the “R” of the R&B.

Mod divided mainly into two categories; A.) Merseybeat (Sometimes with soul elements) and B.) British R’n’B (with strong Blues-oriented patterns). Freakbeat as Mod‘s derivative divides in two seperate camps as well; C.) “Popsike-y” Freakbeat and D.) much wilder and rawer British R’n’B with effects. 

Some say the criteria for Freakbeat might be vague and loose. Of course, the term was misused as an advertisement for selling rare records and marketing hype for compilations that cover those. But this shouldn’t mislead to such conclusions as this is a phenomenon that can be found in other musical scenes as well. On the other hand, it’s also understandable why these assumptions are present.

Mod and its child Freakbeat are each like Batman’s “Twoface”. One genre, two personalities. Is it Beat? Is it Blues? Is it Soul? Nevertheless, with a closer look, both styles are not “vague” or “loose” in the definition.

They are rather diverse, rich and complex to understand in their musical anatomy like a Hydra with several heads.

One of the best cross sections of Freakbeat is ‘My Friend Jack’ by The Smoke. Being top-notch representatives, their song about Jack eating LSD drenched lumps of sugar, hit the nerve of what it was about (among other things). A song that made it into the charts in a time of lyrical censorship. Just one year earlier overseas Jefferson Airplane’s album ‘Takes Off’ was repressed due to censorship of their “explicit” lines in the song “Let Me In”. So we can assume that the elders had no idea of what the code-slang “eating sugar lumps” stood for.

"Freakbeat" is a label applied retroactively to music created in the transition from the pill-fueled mod years of the early-to-mid-60s to the psychedelic sounds that flourished by decade's end. Freakbeat stretched the straight ahead dance beats with heavier bass and reverb, fuzz boxes and phase units that created a more elastic sound. These weren't acid-flushed hippie-jams, but you could feel the drugs starting to take hold. Freakbeat mixed British beat harmonies, garage rock snarl, and strident, aggressive guitar playing with overt studio craft. Its brilliance lay in the combination of catchy beat-era melodies and concise structures with the developing musical freedoms of psychedelia.

Superstar acts like the Yardbirds and the Pretty Things created music that was termed freakbeat, but it was the lesser-known acts that were the center of the '80s retro-obsession during which the genre was christened.

The Score's cover of The Beatles' "Please Please Me" is a perfect freakbeat example - melodic as a Beatles song, but with charging drums, the sort of bass playing McCartney started on Revolver, and an in-your-face vocal that wouldn't have gone over well on Ed Sullivan.

Other covers include a heavy blues reconstruction of "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" that likewise would have had parents changing the station on The Monkees, and a punchy, twanging, reverb laden take on "Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)" that's more reminiscent of The Animals and Soul Survivors' covers than Donovan's original. The originals are just as good, including the wicked organ-and-guitar garage groove of Paul Ritchie's "Come on Back," the Zombies/Hollies-styled harmonies and frenetic guitar solo of The Majority's "One Third," The Mark Four's garage blues "I'm Leaving," The Beatstalkers distorted soul "You Better Get a Better," and the Fire's Who/Yardbirds styled "Father's Name is Dad."

So, after exhaustive and extensive online research, plus my own recollections and memories, here is my personal compilation of what I consider to be the 1,000 best and most important tracks from the original 1960s freakbeat era.

This fully packed 35CD set contains a considerable amount of rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with many featured in their original 7" mono 45 single form. No later remixes or 'stereo enhanced' versions here!

All the very poor distorted, crackly vinyl rips from the English Freakbeat series featured in this collection: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Freakbeat_series have been replaced with far superior recent clean digital files and CD rips.
