The Brill Building is an office building at 1619 Broadway on 49th Street in the New York City borough of Manhattan, just north of Times Square and further uptown from the historic musical Tin Pan Alley neighborhood. It was built in 1931 as the Alan E. Lefcourt Building, after the son of its builder Abraham E. Lefcourt, and designed by Victor Bark Jr. The building is 11 stories high and has approximately 175,000 square feet (16,300 m2) of rentable area.

The Brill Building is famous for housing music industry offices and studios where some of the most popular American songs were written. It is considered to have been the center of the American music industry that dominated the pop charts in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. The "Brill" name comes from a haberdasher who operated a store at street level and subsequently bought the building.

New York City's Brill Building and pop music go together like bread and butter, or in this case, like Goffin-King, Leiber-Stoller, or Barry-Greenwich. In the 1950s and 60s, songwriters, record producers, and wannabe pop stars flocked to 1619 Broadway in New York with dreams of churning out the next big hit. Full of small rooms with upright pianos, The Brill Building was labelled a "song-factory", but it's true spirit grew out of a community that collaborated and challenged each other to achieve greatness. The result would culminate in an incredible musical era known as "The Brill Building Sound" and would define pop music to this day, delivering hits like "Leader of the Pack," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," and "Sugar Sugar."

Many artists were also headquartered in the Brill Building including Carole King, Neil Diamond, Paul Simon, Neil Sedaka, Connie Francis, Lesley Gore, The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las, Dionne Warwick, and Doris Troy.

The scene was a veritable hit conveyor belt, with songwriters working their 9-to-5s in cubicles, expected to turn in their masterpieces at regular intervals, often at command. Many of these songwriters, usually teams of two, have become legends in the trade: Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman, Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield, Cynthia Weil & Barry Mann… Some of these were supervised by another legendary pair of writers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, or by impresarios such as Don Kirshner, the co-owner of Aldon Music who’d later launch The Monkees. Neil Diamond launched his superstar career from the base of the Brill Building, where he started out as a songwriter, as did a youngster named Jerry Landis, whom you’d now address as Paul Simon, and the great, underrated Laura Nyro.

Many of the best works in this diverse category were written by a loosely affiliated group of songwriter-producer teams - mostly duos - that enjoyed immense success and who collectively wrote some of the biggest hits of the period. Many in this group were close friends and/or (in the cases of Goffin-King, Mann-Weil and Greenwich-Barry married couples, as well as creative and business associates - and both individually and as duos, they often worked together and with other writers in a wide variety of combinations. Some (Carole King, Paul Simon, Burt Bacharach, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Boyce and Hart) recorded and had hits with their own music.

Among the hundreds of hits written by this group are "Maybe I Know" (Barry-Greenwich), "Yakety Yak" (Leiber-Stoller), "Save the Last Dance for Me" (Pomus-Shuman), "The Look of Love" (Bacharach-David), "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" (Sedaka-Greenfield), "Devil in Disguise" (Giant-Baum-Kaye), "The Loco-Motion" (Goffin-King), "Supernatural Thing" (Haras Fyre-Gwen Guthrie), "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place" (Mann-Weil), and "River Deep, Mountain High" (Spector-Greenwich-Barry).

The Brill Building (also known as Brill Building pop or the Brill Building sound) is a subgenre of pop music that took its name from the Brill Building in New York City, where numerous teams of professional songwriters penned material for girl groups and teen idols during the early 1960s. The term has also become a metonym for the period in which those songwriting teams flourished.

The music conceived at the Brill Building was more sophisticated than other pop styles of the time, combining contemporary sounds with classic Tin Pan Alley songwriting. Productions often featured orchestras and bands with large rhythm and guitar sections, while its lyrics focused on idealized romance and adolescent anxieties, only rarely exploring more mature themes.

The genre dominated the American charts in the period between Elvis Presley's army enlistment in 1958 and the onset of the British Invasion in 1964.

After Tin Pan Alley’s luster began to fade this became one of the primary locations in Manhattan for industry offices and studios where some of the most popular American songs of all time were written.

The “Brill Building sound” grew out of the stretch of buildings along Broadway between 49th and 53rd streets. The Brill Building was named after the Brill Brothers whose clothing store was first located in the street level corner. After its completion in 1931, the Depression caused the owners to rent space to music publishers like; Southern Music, Mills Music, and Famous-Music. These publishers were soon joined by many others and by 1962 the Brill Building housed 165 music businesses.

In the early 60s, this building became an exemplar of “vertical integration” that gave birth to a unique type of “assembly line pop”. This building’s culture enabled a writer to take a new song and make the rounds of publishers until someone bought it. You could then take it and go to another floor and get an arrangement. You could then purchase a lead sheet, then buy some copies at the duplication office; book an hour to make a demo in a studio; then hire some of the vocalists and musicians from among the artists that hung around and cut a demo of the song. Next, in the same building, you could walk it into publishers' offices, record companies. You could even shop the song to an artist’s managers or even artists who may be in the building. When a deal is done you could even negotiate with a radio promoter who could help you promote and sell the record.

The independent music companies in the Brill Building had a creative culture that came to define the influential “Brill Building Sound” and the style of popular songwriting and recording created by its writers and producers. Paul Simon, and Burt Bacharach and many others had offices in the building over time.

Carole King described the atmosphere at the publishing houses of the period: “Every day we squeezed into our respective cubby holes with just enough room for a piano, a bench, and maybe a chair for the lyricist if you were lucky. You’d sit there and write, and you could hear someone in the next cubby hole composing a song exactly like yours. The pressure in the Brill Building was really terrific - because Donny (Kirshner) would play one songwriter against another. He’d say: “We need a new smash hit”—and we’d all go back and write a song and the next day we’d each audition for Bobby Vee’s producer.”

Donny Kirshner was an example of the key producer/publishers in the building. He was co-owner of the influential New York-based publishing company Aldon Music, which had under contract at various times several of the most important songwriters of the “Brill Building” sound, including Gerry Goffin, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Paul Simon, Howard Greenfield, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil and Jack Keller. As a producer-promoter, Kirshner was instrumental in launching the careers of singers and songwriters, like Tony Orlando, Neil Diamond, Carole King, and Sarah Dash of Labelle, as well as discovering a few rock acts, like Kansas. There were a number of other more rock-oriented publishers who helped develop the musical tastes of the 60s.

The Brill Building was purchased by 1619 Broadway Realty LLC in June 2013 and underwent renovation during the 2010s. A CVS Pharmacy opened on the first two floors of the building in 2019.
