Eddie Piller Presents... British Mod Sounds of the 1960s / British Mod Sounds Volume 2: The Freakbeat & Psych Years / The Mod Top 100 [2024] (12 x CDs)
Eddie Piller Presents... British Mod Sounds of the 1960s (4CD) (2022)
Demon are proud to release “Eddie Piller Presents... British Mod Sounds of the 1960s”. Featuring 100 original tracks across 4CDs, its a deep dive into the Mod scene in ’60s Britain. Including a selection of classic and rare tracks, tracing the scene from its R&B roots to a soulful finale.
Curated by Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder Eddie Piller, and featuring new sleeve notes from respected author and broadcaster Paul ‘Smiler’ Anderson.
As Eddie Piller points out in the forward to the extensive sleeve notes that accompany this collection, he chose the word ‘Sounds’ carefully, reflecting the variety of talent contained here, from uncool session musicians without an ounce of style in them, acts who saw an opportunity to jump on the Mod bandwagon and bands who wholeheartedly embraced Mod way of life.
And so this new collection mixes the Mod mainstays (Small Faces, The High Numbers, The Action, The Fleur de Lys), with a generous selection of future superstars (David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Marc Bolan, Jeff Beck and Graham Gouldman of 10cc are all represented here), and a few artists so obscure, so rare, that they never got to release a record in the ’60s, but Eddie has tracked down the tapes nonetheless.
“Be in with the In Crowd once more.”
Every great youth cult deserves a great soundtrack, and when the ’60s Mods adopted classic American R&B, with a side order of hip Jazz, they undoubtedly found the right music for their exuberant and stylish way of life. And yet, buying expensive imports, hoping for a local release or praying for a rare visit from overseas talent was never going to be enough to satisfy British youth with a thirst for the latest sounds. Certainly not those on the dancefloor and definitely not those with their own musical ambitions.
It was a music scene that began with imitation, before skill and imagination lead curious minds to innovation, a scene that evolved from average (at best) copies of releases on the Chess, Motown and Stax labels, to become something more sophisticated, something quite unique, something very British.
FOREWORD BY EDDIE PILLER
It may never be possible to create the definitive Mod collection for two rather obvious reasons. The first is that taste is purely subjective. One man's Hipster Image is another woman's Reg Guest Syndicate; no matter how hard I try, there will always be people that disagree with my selections.
The second is rather more difficult to overcome: Licensing. Along with the aforementioned Hipster Image and Reg Guest, I haven't been able to secure important tracks from the likes of The Graham Bond Organisation, The Rolling Stones, Brian Auger Trinity, The Who, Them, Linda Lewis, The Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra and a dozen more, all for a variety of often quite bizarre reasons! But, I've worked with what we could get and this box set is the end result.
I'd also like to point out that this collection is called 'British Mod Sounds of the 1960's' for a reason. Many people will tell you that there was no such thing as a Mod band, only records Mods listened to.
While they may have a point, I would have to disagree. Some of the tracks included here were made by very uncool session musicians without an ounce of Mod in them but of course there were actual Mod bands.
There were bands who had one or two real, bona fide Mods in their line-up - like The Kinks, The Artwoods or The Moments - and there were bands whose members were exclusively Mod in their genetic make-up, like the Small Faces, The Action or The Fleur de Lys. But the most important thing about the Mod scene was that it was about the music and the dancing as much as it was the clothes and the scooters. From Jazz and Blues to R&B and Soul, from Ska and Rocksteady to Freakbeat and Psych, it's a very broad church.
I hope you enjoy listening to this collection as much as l've enjoyed putting it together

Eddie Piller Presents... British Mod Sounds Volume 2: The Freakbeat & Psych Years (4CD) (2023)
Curated by Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder Eddie Piller, “British Mod Sounds of the 1960s Volume 2: The Freakbeat & Psych Years” is the follow up to the hugely successful “British Mod Sounds of the 1960s”, featuring 95 original tracks across a 4CD set - a deep dive into the post-Mod scene in ’60s Britain. Featuring a selection of classic and rare tracks, tracing the scene from early ’65 to the dawn of a new decade.
Even before Demon’s well received 2022 box set ‘British Mod Sounds of the 1960s’ was released conversations were being had around a follow-up, though rather than just offering a straight if slightly diluted second volume, compiler Eddie Piller decided to put together a collection exploring “What the Mods did next”. Once again, long conversations (and the occasional heated debate) were had to ensure the quality of music and attention to detail were second to none. Anything less just wouldn’t be the Mod way.
The British Mod bands that had made the first half of the decade so exciting were still around but inevitably their influences had changed. No longer content with re-hashing American R&B, the scene split in multiple directions, not all of it forward looking – some hardened their up-tempo sound and gradually evolved into what we would come to know as Freakbeat. Others bought in psychedelic, esoteric or Eastern influences. A third strand explored a more pastoral or Folk based route. Simply put, songs and hair got longer.
Before the decade was out the choices for the discerning listener included Jazz-Rock, Proto-Prog, Whimsy, Heavy Rock, and Psychedelic Soul – even sounds derived from Cockney music-hall made an appearance.
‘Volume 2: The Freakbeat & Psych Years’ tracks the development of the original Mod mainstays (the Small Faces, The Who, The Action, The Kinks), with a generous selection of future superstars (David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Steve Howe of Yes are all represented here), alongside a few artists so obscure, so rare, that they never got to release a record in the ’60s, but Eddie has tracked down the tapes nonetheless.
FOREWORD BY EDDIE PILLER
When it was suggested that I should compile a follow-up to 'British Mod Sounds of the 1960s' I was slightly sceptical. That 100-track box set was (to my mind at least) the ultimate collection of British Mod tracks. Yes, there were issues that prevented me from making the PERFECT collection, but I wasn't sure I could better it.
I sat back and thought, could that compilation be improved on, and came to the conclusion, no, it couldn't. So, I came at the challenge from a different perspective. If there was no point in just doing a simple 'Volume 2' - the same kind of material but not quite as good - then why not create a collection to explore "What Mods Did Next".
All those bands were still around but perhaps inevitably their influences had changed. No longer were British Mod groups doing bog-standard takes on American R&B while adding their own twist to the mix. No - what came next was the post-Mod psychedelic explosion. The same bands and musicians had absorbed different influences and new ideas, some progressive and others looking back to the hard and fast rock 'n' roll which had become known as 'garage' in the States. In Britain, a country whose culture had always taken a pick and mix approach to US influences, there were a variety of strands to the next wave. All of them, to some degree, were influenced by the progressive, acid-inspired west coast hippy culture.
The first were the Mod bands who had come to the scene relatively late. They hardened their up-tempo sound and gradually evolved into what we would come to know as 'Freakbeat'.
The second were the groups who willingly joined the Psych explosion and adjusted their sound to include psychedelic, esoteric and - in some cases - eastern influences.
Then we had a more pastoral and folk based progression epitomised by The Kinks and their magnum-opus, 'The Village Green Preservation Society'. Mod had exploded in a hundred different directions.
Jazz-rock, proto-prog, whimsy, heavy rock, psychedelic soul and even cockney music-hall made an appearance. The Mod scene as we knew it may have disappeared almost overnight but there was no getting away from the fact that all of the bands came from the same, very specific place.
Whatever their contemporary style, every single one of them started in that dynamic, compelling, explosive over-arching Mod scene which had dominated both concerts and dance halls in the first half of the decade.
Mod had moved on while retaining vast swathes of its cultural DNA.
Following the success of 'Volume 1', gathering together the material became slightly easier but there are still at least a dozen tracks I wanted to include here but couldn't get!
That said, I'm very happy with what we have in this collection, and I hope you are too.

Eddie Piller Presents... The Mod Top 100 (4CD) (2024)
While the recordings on Eddie Piller’s latest release may be familiar to die hard fans of great ’60s music, the story behind it will be new to many but is well worth telling - and hearing – all the same.
A lot of youngsters fell in love with the Mod lifestyle during the revival at the end of the ’70s, but the more inquisitive ones - like Eddie - wanted to know more about the original fashions, the original influential figures, and most of all the original music. Step forward one Randy Cozens, eager to give the benefit of his advice. In those pre-internet days, his platform of choice was the letter pages of the weekly music press. His enthusiasm, his passion, and the sheer volume of missives he posted persuaded Sounds to commission Randy’s guide to the music that was played in the all-nighter clubs in London’s West End in those early ’60s halcyon days. And so, the original Mod Top 100 was born.
Eddie has taken Randy’s list and added some personal favourites from the era where original selections are no longer available. The result is ‘Eddie Piller Presents... The Mod Top 100’, a new 4CD set containing 100 examples of R&B, Soul, Jazz, and Beat that you would expect to hear on the finest and most discerning dancefloors. With new sleeve notes from Eddie, and the generous support of Randy’s children, Paul and Terry, this release also serves as a fitting tribute to one of the most influential and important figures on the scene (as Eddie relates, when Randy passed away in 2003 there were more than 500 mods at his funeral, dancing in unison to The Soul Brothers Six and ‘I’ll Be Loving You’).
‘Eddie Piller Presents... The Mod Top 100’ includes Soul divas like Doris Troy, Betty Everett, and Bessie Banks, the tender side of Soul from Chuck Jackson, Mitty Collier, and Eddie Holman, floorfillers from James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, and Solomon Burke, instrumental grooves from Hank Jacobs, George Stone, and the Ramsey Lewis Trio, and much more. The Soul torch passes down the generations, but the flame just keeps on burning.
PLEASE NOTE: These 12 discs are the official Demon CD releases and ripped from my own personal box sets and a replacement for the cobbled together versions from various different sources that have been doing the rounds for the past couple of years.
Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteMost of my exposure to this music was the radio. I never had the money for records or clothes that made up the Mod lifestyle. The music has lasted 60 years and still has balls. This day and age we can all enjoy it again. Thanks for bringing it to us.
Hi BB
Wonderful - includes gems like the Blue Rondos - Baby I go for you ! thanks BB
ReplyDeleteThanks again K & BB this fits nicely with the other mod releases you've given us lately.
ReplyDeleteImmense in every sense! Thankyou so much for a dazzling selection as I now go hunting for my Hepworth's 3-piece suit and Parka. K and BB, the finest combination of letters in the alphabet.
