Sonny Stitt, born Edward Hammond Boatner Jr. on February 2, 1924, in Boston, Massachusetts, was a distinguished American jazz saxophonist celebrated for his contributions to the bebop and hard bop styles. His musical journey began in Saginaw, Michigan, where he was adopted by the Stitt family and later took on the name “Sonny.” Stitt’s professional career took off in the early 1940s, playing with big bands led by Tiny Bradshaw, Billy Eckstine, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Initially, Stitt’s career was overshadowed by comparisons to Charlie Parker, but he gradually carved out his own identity, especially on the tenor saxophone.
