 COPYCATS 3

VA - Copycats Volume 3, Rewritten Songs (A Butterboy Compilation) (15 x CDs)

"VA - Copycat - Rewritten Songs" are tracks that have reused melodies, lyrics, or chord structures, whether intentionally or not. While some remakes credit the original composer, most do not. These songs vary from obvious reproductions to those with similar riffs or just inspired by the original.

Pablo Picasso said, "Good artists copy, great artists steal."  Creativity spawns' creativity, as they say.

The line between influence and imitation in music can be fuzzy. Many great artists have borrowed elements from others, creating their own masterpieces. These similarities can be coincidental, subliminal, or intentional, and sometimes lead to legal disputes.

Imitation can be seen as flattery or influence. Artists often tour together or share history, leading to familiar sounding music. It can be challenging to determine if a song has been copied, but some artists like The Beatles, Tom Petty, and Simon and Garfunkel view remakes as a sign of respect, maybe because they too have borrowed from the past.

I previously posted "Copycats" Volume 1 & "Copycats" Volume 2, and each received positive feedback and suggestions. You can find them here.

So, returning by popular demand, here’s Volume 3 of the “Copycat” series. Like its predecessors, it features songs bearing striking resemblances to others. Some share a riff or chorus, others the song structure, and some are slower or faster than the original, while others pay homage. They are indeed “Copycats”.

After extensive research and song collection, I present 317 tracks (with over 16 hrs. of music) that may leave you puzzled or awake at night, while others will be instantly recognizable. Regardless, these tracks should give you a sense of how music evolved from one artist to another.

I’ve tried to avoid repeating tracks from the first two volumes, but please forgive any inadvertent repeats. As before, some tracks have 3 versions of the same song to highlight the change from one artist to another. Some referenced songs lack available recordings from their release time, so I’ve used a later track to represent the song’s structure (e.g., some classical pieces). Whilst the first two volumes focused mainly on rock versions, this volume includes many genres.

Each song is presented in release/inception date order, with the original first, followed by the ‘Copycat’ version(s).

I feel this is the best approach to review the music historically.

Enjoy!

  1. It should be noted that, as good as the intent certainly was, Copyright Laws strangled music of the folk. Blues, Country, Western, spirituals, etc , the music of the people, it was not only acceptable, it was expected that if you sang a well known song, you would add your own verses or versions of it. Music was a communal thing.
Copyright laws strangled that, or, as your post(s) illustrate, they tried too.

    1. Hi Deadmandeadman
You bring up an intriguing point about the influence of copyright laws on folk music traditions. Historically, genres like blues, country, western, and spirituals and flourished on communal participation and the sharing of songs. As you rightly mention, it was common for artists to add their own verses or variations, creating a rich tapestry of interpretations and expressions.
However, copyright laws, while intended to protect creators’ rights, have indeed introduced limitations on this communal aspect. Striking a balance between safeguarding intellectual property and fostering a culture of shared creativity is delicate. It’s crucial to acknowledge both the benefits and the challenges that these laws present.
      Cheers.

    1. Hi Juha.
      Not much to explain.
“Billion Dollar Babies” by Alice Cooper and “Tell Me to My Face” by The Hollies share some similarities. There has been some discussion among fans about the vocal phrasing in the chorus of both songs sounding similar. Additionally, “Billion Dollar Babies” by Alice Cooper does sample “Tell Me to My Face” by The Hollies.

    1. Hi Herve,
Digging is great and many have done this research before, finding it is difficult at times. I think there will always be something to find.
I hope this set adds value to the listeners experience.
      Cheers.

  6. BB, many of the songs you call "copycats" are actually "contrafacts." A contrafact is a musical composition built using the chord progression of a pre-existing song, but with a new melody and arrangement. Typically the original tune's progression and song form will be reused but occasionally just a section will be reused in the new composition. The term comes from classical music and was first applied to jazz by musicologists in the 1970s and 1980s.

In Jazz there are hundreds of cases; possibly one of the most famous is:
Ahmad Jamal -Pavanne (a cover of Morton Gould's)> Miles Davis-So What> John Coltrane-Impressions

    1. Hi DocMF.
I understand your point clearly. Contrafacts are indeed a fascinating aspect of music composition as they allow artists to build upon existing harmonic structures while creating something entirely new and unique. Sometimes they are alternate versions of the same structures. The example you provided is a perfect illustration of how contrafacts work in jazz. Contrafacts is a good word. I chose the popular theme of copycats.
The songs included here bear a striking resemblance to other songs. Some share a riff or chorus, others the song structure, and some are slower or faster than the original, while others pay homage to the original. They are indeed “Copycats” in the sense that when you hear them next to each other they are recognisable if even so slightly.
      Cheers.

    1. Hi lemonflag.
There are some surprises in this lot and a few that may still be too obscure.
But most of all I hope you have fun with these.
      Cheers.

  9. A request but no urgency. The compilation 1 & 2 in the same spirit, links are dead, if they are not similar if you think to reactivate them, but there are so much to hear with the volume 3. Question in the post 1 & 2 does every title and the copy are together, one after the other? Crazy work!!!!

    1. Hi DevantF.
I will add an alternative link later but please note the 2 link (Pixeldrain) is active and working for both sets.
They are both in the order original then copycat one after the other.
      Cheers

    1. Hi Paul,
The music is different today, as it was in most decades. That makes it interesting.
      Cheers.

  11. Here's an example I stumbled across today BB that you might want to use for a future volume. 1968 jazzer Steve Marcus seems to have inspired a very similar, very famous sax line on Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street. Here's Half a Heart by Steve Marcus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWu7k7pHzkQ

    1. Thank you, AC.
I am aware of Steve Marcus and have some of his music. Interesting video.
He makes some great hard bop/fusion/jazz rock
      Cheers.
