VA - The Golden Age Of Underground Radio, Featuring Tom Donahue [1989] + The Golden Age of Underground Radio Vol. 2, Featuring B. Mitchell Reed [1997] (2 x CDs)

KPPC, the first underground FM station in L.A., broadcast from a Pasadena church basement thanks to Tom Donahue and B. Mitchel Reed. KMET followed, and the rest is history. These DCC Compact Classics releases feature music from KMET Radio, Los Angeles, 1968-1971.

“The Golden Age of Underground Radio” (1989) with Tom Donahue takes you back to the late 1960s underground radio scene. This album captures the counterculture movement with a mix of genres, Donahue’s charming commentary, and vintage commercials, offering an authentic and immersive experience. It’s a gem for music lovers seeking nostalgia, celebrating the creativity and rebellious spirit of the era.

“The Golden Age of Underground Radio Vol. 2” (1997) with B. Mitchell Reed revisits the late 1960s and early 1970s underground radio. This compilation features diverse genres, Reed’s engaging commentary, and vintage commercials, creating an authentic atmosphere. It’s a treasure for music enthusiasts, celebrating the innovation and rebellion of the time.

These two releases by DCC Compact Classics offer the listener a sence of what radio could be when it was still run by humans with unique tastes instead of program-list mandates from corporate. In the late 60s and early 70s, freeform radio thrived on the absence of playlists. It was the responsibility of each D.J. to craft an entire listening experience using their own skill and judgement. 1. Sweet Jesus. Genuine tears in my eyes. Got back from Vietnam and tried returning to my home town, Chicago, but my girl had moved on and my friends were all still teenagers. So I tried the West Coast. Picked L.A. at random. Had a couple of changes of clothes, a guitar, and about $100. Fell in with some hippie chick "actresses" and smoked many a joint listening to KMET. What memories this brings back. You have no idea. Thanks so much for sharing.

    1. Hi Spidey,
Thank you for sharing your heartfelt and vivid story. It’s amazing how music can transport us back to such significant moments in our lives. Your journey from Vietnam to Chicago and then to L.A. sounds like it was filled with both challenges and unforgettable experiences. It’s incredible how a song or a radio station like KMET can bring back such powerful memories.
      Cheers.

  3. Thanks very much for these. Fun to listen to the days gone by.

Do you happen to have the "Nippers Greatest Hits" compilation series released by RCA in the 1980s and 1990s. These are limited to RCA releases 1900-1980s, but the few I have heard were good quality and entertaining.
    Thanks,
    Mike M
